Speed Awareness Course - what do I need to know?

Hi, hope this is correct forum

I’ve got this on Tuesday via Zoom, so wondered if anyone had done one recently?

Just read the ‘can I fail’ thread, but that goes back to 2012.

That’s what I did on my recent zoom course, nobody failed the course.

He asked questions randomly, if you didn’t know the answer he’d tell explain, without blowing my own trumpet I knew all the answers, a lot didn’t, especially speed limits.

I think the only way you’d fail is if you are argumentative and get kicked out

If / when they try tell you that 3rd gear is the most fuel efficient gear to be in at 30mph, just keep your mouth shut, it's not worth it.

It’ll be fine. The algebra and trigonometry bits are a bit tricky, but apart from that it is pretty straightforward.

I did one a few months back. It was all very grown up & sensible. One guy who kept trying to showboat about his ability to control the massive power of his BMW was the only negative. The guy running the course wasn't overly patronising but obviously he had to keep to the script.

Turn phone off, keep kids, dogs etc out of room. Keep camera on. Nod and smile.

I was on course about a year ago and a lady got kicked off as she kept answering her phone and kids kept coming in.

TBF doing one of those courses in a room with other drivers is a terrifying insight into the people we share the roads with and their utter ignorance of the basics of how to drive

I was going to say you will learn something if you listen. I still think that's true for the first two you'll attend

The first one I attended I learnt that you shouldn't drive a Merc Sprinter on the motorway at 70 (I had recently hired a van for the first time and genuinely didn't know this). I had simply forgotten as the Highway Code was read prior to my test and never revisited.

My last one the leads were discussing the Highway Code when I pointed out that when I learnt to drive you had to read it and were tested. Now the kids simply download an app and practice and then take the exam and I said that needed addressing. I was told that the advice was that they should read it. Again I said yes I understand that, but in the real world it's not happening and that needed addressing. Again I was told that they should read it. I nodded my head and sighed inside.

Not an expert, but you can do 70 on a motorway, can't you? It's A roads where it's different.

On the course daughter did there was a 'pro' van driver who genuinely didn't know vans had different limits.

I'm sure vans are 70 on the motorway and 60 on a dual carriageway. Happy to be corrected though.

Being online you've now got the new risk of getting cut off due to you internet dropping out, a power cut or computer failure.
Presumably you'd get a chance to do it again that maybe you don't if you get kicked out, but still worth taking steps to avoid, eg try and use a laptop or tablet, make sure its fully charged, get all its updates done and have a phone on hand with enough data to see you through that you can use to tether if your broadband goes down.

Sprinters are 95 on the motorway.
