I'm buying a second hand car which won't be ready for collection until nearly the end of this month. I have no immediate need to collect the car until next month so would like to avoid taxing it this month (thereby saving £40). But the dealer wants to include the sale within his figures for this month.

I would be happy to complete the purchase this month, but if I do that, does the car have to be SORNed or taxed in my name from the date of purchase ? I think that you cannot un-SORN a car within two weeks of SORNing it, and I would not want to leave it on the dealer's premises that long.

The sale can still complete and the tax can be sorted by you at a later date can it not?

You won't be fined or anything for a few days of no tax

Just tell the dealer you are happy to comlete the sale on the 31st (as long as you are happy with everything on the vehicle) but will not pick it up until the 1st April, tax it then on collection.

ask the dealer to knock off a month of VED from the agreed fee if he agrees then you can complete whenever as he will have paid for the tax

As Ceylon above - just tell the dealer to go ahead and do the deal but to keep the car on his private land until you pick it up, which you will in early April. Easiest is indeed he does the deal on the 31st, you collect and tax the next day - the DVLA will be impressed by how quickly it was taxed smile

That is the plan, just wanted to check whether DVLA would notice (and care) that it was neither taxed nor sorned while I owned it.

I'm picking up a used car on the 1st of April, I've paid a deposit, dealer is happy to keep it in the showroom until the1st when I pick it up, I will tax it then even though I will complete the sale on the 31st by paying the balance.

I'd check whether the car is taxed now first.

I bought a car privately on 19 December 2019 and asked the seller to leave it a day before notifying DVLA of the sale, drove it home still taxed (albeit not by me but ANPR cameras can't tell) and parked it until 1 January!

Plan B was for my mate to drive it back on his trade plates.

Plan C (which I used earlier that year for my daily) was to pick it up on my mate's transporter.

It's not what you know, etc.................laugh

I'm sure it won't be - it's a JLR Approved Used which I think was in stock before the beginning of this month.

If the dealer wants it in his figures for this month that might be worth £40 to him, so I'd try this first. Worth a go...
