Was pottering out along the A30 towards Staines last night when (on a straight clear dual carriageway, which was through some mismanagement of our road resources labelled a 50), when I happened across a Patrol Car parked in the central reservation, at the site of a known mobile speed trap.

There were no officers obviously outside the car, no windows open etc However, there was something up on the back top of the car.

Is this some sort of speed-trapping mechanism? I wonder how the officer forms a view that the target is speeding in his rear view mirror...

Assume I was ok as possibly only marginally over the limit, and sitting in lane one being overtaken at the time...

It's probably ANPR. Avon & somersets traffic cars have it on the roof, facing backwards at an angle, so it can read the traffic that passes them. Looks like a white cylinder about3-4 inches across, and about a foot long.
