Even longer ago but I love this police female recruitment advert from the 1930’s. The last sentence is classic - must be fairly good looking. I wonder who got the job of judging that?

Good looks was obviously one of the major criteria for women officer in the City. If they were low down on the bell curve, so to speak, they were the children of ex-old bill. The recruiting sergeant was challenged about this in the canteen once, but reckoned that he treated everyone the same. It led to a few problems. Always scandles going on.

They were treated appallingly, one being called Bert Cruikshank to her face. One joke to a kid who was less well-endowed shocked me even then. We were in a van, crewed by a driver, sergeant, three male PCs and one female PC. The sergeant thought it hilarious to say, 'I'll tell you a joke. You'll laugh your t-ts off. Oh, you've heard it Karen.'

The PCs told her not to let it get to her, but she left before the end of her probation.

When I chatted to my father about joining the police, he told me to ignore everything I saw on TV and film. I went to my local nick, Westcombe Park, and asked if I could chat with one of the PCs. I was given the biggest moaner I've ever known. He went to the lengths of showing me his 'time card', saying that he could not get the time off. I was handed back to the desk sergeant and I asked why he had picked him as he was hardly a positive voice for joining. He said something like showing me the worst of the job. I went out in a patrol car, but they got a pursuit and had to drop me. But they were two very keen lads, enjoying the job. Convinced me.

Mind you, we've all thought that, haven't we.
