1 owner car actually 2 previous... any comeback?

Have you got the original advert? It may have been worded as '1 previous private owner' omitting that perhaps it was pre-registered or a demo car, thus having the dealership as the first owner on the V5. Cheeky but technically true wording

Could be ex-demo or pre-registered? Do you have it in writing that the salesman said one owner?

I’ve had my VW T6 from new, only I’ve ever driven it, but it’s two owners, long story but my brother brought it and then we transferred ownership to me at a later date.

There could be a genuine reason, not sure it would bother me unless it affected the value hugely or affected desirability.

Do people really care these days? For me a car is either brand new or 2nd hand. Unless it’s newish with a list of owners as long as your arm then why care? There can be so many reasons these days people change cars.

Dealer selling will say it doesn’t matter. Dealer buying will say it knocks X off the value lol.

Whilst it's difficult to find the previous owner on the new V5C (removed for GDPR compliance) - do you know if the dealer registered it to themselves for any reason.

This would mean that the V5C (had you seen it) would have show 1 previous owner (i.e. from new).

Once this was registered to you, the V5C would show 2 previous owners (original & dealer), so you'd be the 3rd owner.

Unless it's a rare car, or you only intend on keeping it for 3 months, then I'd not worry.

That 'previous owner from new' could easily have been a leasing company, a hire car company, or just Hoke Coburn!

My Z4MC had 2 owners on it when I bought it at 2 years old and 9,000 miles. 13 years later it has 160,000 miles and an additional owner. Not sure a couple of extra owners on mine would make any difference at all - as the usual instruction is to buy on condition & history, rather than miles & owners.

TBH it would annoy me a bit. If I was looking at used car a 3 owner car would be down in preference to a one or two owner car that's for sure.

One owner from new on current logbook would mean including the current owner at the time of sale. (So when the person sold it to the dealer, they were the "second" owner and the logbook would have said one former keeper.) When a car is brought into the trade, this doesn't affect owner count. However, it will be sold using the V5 given to the dealer when they took the vehicle in, which is used to tax the vehicle, for the new owner. The dealer doesn't receive a new logbook.

The second owner won't show until YOUR V5 arrives, where in it will say "2 PREVIOUS keepers". This will be the first owner, and the second who then part exchanged it or sold it to a dealer. The new logbook is initiated when the dealer uses the old V5C reference to tax the car for the new owner.

So technically, they sold a 1 previous owner car (which was true at the time of sale) but failed to mention the owner hanging in 'limbo' while the car sold. This is VERY common, and I've had to deal with it many times selling cars for a number of years.

A bit sus, yes, but happens regularly.


Edit: Realistically, you'll likely receive nothing. And honestly, don't lose sleep over it. Owner count means very little yet consumers seem to attach some sort of superficial value to the number. Unless it's something incredibly rare it's utterly negligible. That being said, I've sold classic 911's with 14 previous keepers with no issues whatsoever.
