Exported car forgot to inform DVLA

Will I get in trouble for this?
Say a car was permanently exported and reregistered in another country (left as SORN in the UK)
What if I plan to bring the car back to UK?

If you never bring it back to the UK it should be fine assuming nobody clones the old UK plates ect

I exported a car once, registered it in another country, notified DVD’s etc etc.

5 years later imported same car to the UK, went to DVLA offices to register it to be told “has it ever been exported?” and they gave it back the old registration number.

So my guess is no real issue just unsorn it but check that when you registered it overseas they didn’t tell dvla.

Are you saying it was a car that has been previously exported to some other country, but never declared as such in the UK and the DVLA think it is sitting on SORN somewhere in a garage/barn/field/lake, and that you now want to bring that vehicle back to the UK?

I would imagine from the UK perspective you could just MOT it and try to tax it and see what happens. Do a proper HPI check and see what it says - if it comes back clear, I would just notify the other country where it has been registered that it has been exported and leave it at that.

Was it you that "exported" it in the first place? i.e. is your name on the V5? If not, you could phone the DVLA for advice as you could play dumb and say you just bought it. If not, do the HPI check and take it from there.

I’ve informed the DVLA several times that my car has been exported (over 5 years ago) written to them, Called them, Polish authorities have also informed them. It’s still showing as SORN in the U.K. Gave up with it in the end.

I wrote off a car (owned by my Dad) in Italy in 1985 and I got it scrapped over there at the time.

When my Dad died a few years back I found the V5 document and spare keys in his stuff - it still shows as 'untaxed' on the 'Check if a vehicle is taxed' website.

I'd hazard a guess there are thousands of vehicles in a similar state of limbo...
