Just a quick query - are there any specific rules for being sent to jail for speeding? ie. 70 in a 30 = mandatory jail sentence.

If not is it simply part of a dangerous driving penalty at the dicretion of the judge?

Cheers

Seems to be random.

Couple of bikers were jailed for about 163mph.

Then the Royal Navy chappie was only fined/banned a few months ago for 150 plus.

Seems to depend on whether the judge's piles are playing up on the day.....

When I went to court for that most heinous of crimes (101mph clear road etc) I enquired about penalties from my Solicitor who said that there is no Jail sentence for speeding offences, so I presume that Jailed speeders are done for Dangerous Driving or similar? however this was 3 years ago, maybe things have changed.

If you can prove that your driving is not dangerous maybe Jail can be avoided, although I suspect that this excuse is reserved for a select few

There are enough of us PHers here becoming brainwashed to the idea that >100 mile/h is idiotic/maniacal/dangerous

It CAN be idiotic/maniacal/dangerous just as often as it CAN be ordinary/sensible/safe. It all depends on the place/conditions/circumstances (e.g. 20 limit over a busy zebra crossing versus no limit clear dry empty motorway).

There are those that believe you will spontaneously cause all the ice caps to melt whilst turning you into a paedophile if you nudge 71 whatever the conditions. But their name is Gerorge Monbiot.

We have a precedent. A court decided 150 plus was not dangerous driving...

Yes but only if you are testing a vehicle that you are not properly familiar with at very high speed on a public motorway. If you know how to handle your vehicle very well and you are an expert non-police road driver, then you will have the book thrown at you if you go 8MPH over... or so it would seem

Unfortunately not! The court was not of a senior level therefore cannot set precedents.

If you happen to be a northern traffic copper with a new car you can get away with 159mph without so much as a slapped wrist.
