M40 Beaconsfield

Reading the court reports in the local paper's website (sorry, lost the link) there are a number of people who have attended court for speeding on the M40. Several doing speeds in the eighties and getting small fines, three points, plus court costs rather larger than the fines. Why would these come to court as opposed to being dealt with by an FPN? Could it be to do with the drivers previous record?

Those m40 bridges are a huge hotspot for camera vans, though I have seen why. Some very posh vehicles hooning it between brum & London!

I remember getting my nissan bluebird zx turbo well into 3 figure territory down that stretch of the M40, but then got caught at 80ish by a camera on the A43. Was very happy with that!

Or did they just carry on at their normal cruising speed in the 80's through
road works with a 50mph limit.

For some reason the M40 seems to be one of the worst motorways for speeding, particularly between the M42 and Banbury. I'm often overtaken on that stretch by people doing what looks like well over 100mph.

The tarmac (at least on some more Southerly parts) of the M40 is very smooth and encourages faster driving!

The last few times I have been driving back home round there on the M40 there have been people in fast Audi’s, Mercs etc speeding and weaving in and out of the traffic and generally driving like bell-ends!

Used to commute south from J6 most mornings some years ago, latterly by bike. Most days I'd have just passed J2 and by ticking along at 80-100 on a fairly quiet m/way when a Hayabusa would bomb past at a significantly higher rate of knots. Virtually ever day.

The first time I saw that cairn of rocks on that disused M40 overpass, easily mistaken for a camera on a tripod if you were travelling at a speed starting with a '9' or a '1', well lets just say that was a bit of a brown pants moment.

I think I might of been clocked today M40 heading north around Beaconsfield after you come around a corner the van was on the bridge on my side of motorway, the black square on the of van I assume is camera section was pointing towards me, looking at images online this black section is a flap they usually open when I saw it it was shut can they use the camera from behind it? WHen I looked in rear view after I past it I didn't see anything that looked like camera on other side, are they forward facing? Now the wait, car is lease so I know ticket will go to them first so even longer wait or worth giving it a week then call lease firm? I was over the limit but not sure at what point they would of clocked me so not sure how much by.

Unless they are on 9 points then their previous record will not prevent them receiving a FP offer If the costs considerably out weigh the fines, then it will be going with a NG plea, most will likely be retired engineer types who know all about the law wanting their day in court, representing themselves and coming unstuck like they always do. Or as someone else said, there could have been a variable speed limit in operation

If its your side then sorry you will most probably get a NIP (unless another vehicle blocked a clear read on your plate). These vans they use seem to only be able to track the side of the road they are facing with cameras out of both sides usually. If they are parked in the centre they can track both sides but they seem to put it either far left or far right. I got done by the same van last summer for only 82 mph and it was about a mile away soon as I came around the corner it got me fair n square guvnor & rewarded me with 3 points!

I propose instead of giving points on the licence they should offer you the opportunity to pay however many miles over the limit x say £20 & this doubles every time you get caught! That way they get way more revenue (ONLY reason they do this nothing to do with safety as the van alone causes drivers to stand on the brakes!)

Ah yes, "Pay to speed" : I can see the headlines now. "SPEED LIMITS ONLY APPLY TO THE POOR"

I'd rather see a general review of all limits, with all NIMBY factors removed, and a sensible look at how much time is lost travelling at snails pace through roads that used to have speedlimits 20-30 mph higher.

Shouldn't it be more points & smaller fine?
Then it's not about money.
Giving the points is about trying to change behaviour, so that you force the repeat customers off the road if they don't change behaviour. If you don't have points it's simply an economics decision to drive fast, those that can afford the extra fuel & pay the fines can go fast & those that can't don't.

Fight every speeding penalty. It is simply yet another motoring tax. Are you sure you were driving? Perhaps it was your nanny who has since returned to Latvia, or maybe they cloned your number plate…

Ignore the brakeists on here; the very thought of someone fighting their dogma will send them into a frenzy.. clue they will only be happy once the limit is cut to a universal 4 mph everywhere with the requirement for a man with red flag walking in front…
