My daughter lives at number 10 ******* lane


a month ago the postman put a letter through her letterbox for number 1.....


Her name is Mrs "ABCD"

Letter is for Mr "ABCD" (no first name or initial)

its a charge/fine/invoice for a vehicle using/not paying the M6 Toll

it was a genuine letter from Marstons (M6 Toll debt chasers)

but the daughter/husband have never owned the vehicle on the charge....

(note the address is wrong, the name incomplete so not a DVLA referral?)

I contacted M6 Toll who said speak to Marstons, Marstons didnt want to know, just wanted the £116, kept telling me what i needed to do

today a debt reminder arrived (same wrong address)

firstly, should i report the flipping postman?

How is this different to getting post for someone 200 miles away? It’s not intended for you, so don’t engage and pop through the correct door.. problem solved.

Yes, send it back. Probably still have a problem with the debt chasers though as they are used to slippery customers who deny everything.

I agree - just send it back 'not known at this address'.

I keep getting letters regarding a bus lane transgression by the previous owner of this house, who clearly hasn't updated his v5 (the house was bought 5 years ago!)

The DVLA don't seem bothered - their response was that I need to write to them explaining what the issue is. Not email, not phone, actually write a sodding letter and post to Swansea for them.

I shall await the bailiffs...

Well Mr ABCD could write to Marstons and tell them the situation and that they should stop sending letters. And if they don't he'll take action for harassment and/or see them in court should they want to take it there.

I took this to mean that there was a Mr ABCD married to the daughter

That's more or less what I did when I had debt letters through for someone with a similar name to mine...

I made the mistake of phoning to clear up the error and spoke to an ill-mannered chimpanzee. After hanging up on their faeces flinging I found a template letter on MSE for this situation. It's called something like a "prove it" letter.

So to be clear a letter has arrived at number 10 but it's addressed to number 1, and number 1 doesn't exist.

It's addressed to your son in law.

The car referenced within hasn't been owned by him.

The majority of posts of this nature rarely give full details but the OP still wants forum members to give some advice. This results in members then having to ask pertinent questions for clarification. Quite often the OP dallies for a while then posts some more information which puts the whole situation in a totally different light.

The advice of return to sender is unlikely to work as in this case it is arriving at the address of the person named on it. Ultimately if ignored it will just become a bigger and bigger problem. Marstons will be very used to dealing with letters addressed gone away, and will quickly realise that Mr ABCD lives a few doors away from the address they have and an agent will appear on the doorstep.

Whilst Mr ABCD does not own the vehicle in question named on the letter did he pass though the toll around the time in question an another vehicle? So is it the vehicle reg that is wrong. or has he never been through the toll?

Whatever the answer you need to write to Marstons to explain why not liable.

If these letters are going to number 10, as number 1 doesn't exist, and the postman recognises the name so is delivering them to 10 thinking it's an address mistake, I would put them to one side and ignore. RTS will alert the sender someone is receiving them. If an agent turns up they will be looking for number 1. When they cant find it they will not know someone of the same name lives at number 10. If this really is nothing to do with Op daughter why waste time on it? IANAL.
