Just watch the accidents rise, as people spend 29miles looking at their speedos, instead of reading the road and hazards ahead......

Or just set the snooze control, and do some sight-seeing?

i will be signing up to that A77 group thing this afternoon when i have some time.
It's all very well making our points on here, but lets face it we all pretty much agree on the issue of scameras, time to educate and start discussion with the uninformed!

Handle this just like the alledged timed sections on the french Peage.

Hoof it like a looney, however halfway on your journey stop for a piss or a couple of meaty doughnuts in the middle of the road before proceeding..

Even though you have driven like an idiot the SPEC system will not register it, just the same as it wouldn't register drivers so pissed they can't walk.. :

Maybe he should have posted it in the right forum then but hey ho, the more folks that are aware of these stealth tax machines the better.

It's worth noting that SPECS is incredibly expensive to install compared to normal Gatsos/Truvelos/scamvans (£750K-ish for this scheme, according to the A77 website). In this case it's been funded directly by the Scottish Executive rather than the local scameraship.

There probably aren't too many scamera groups that can afford to take the risk of investing in SPECS, since if it works as intended, they won't gain any revenue from it to pay back the initial investment.

As the technology gets cheaper, this could change though

Just on the news that it has been delayed, briefly.
Oh well tomorrow it starts!

Interesting reading on the Strathclyde "safety" camera partnership (their words not mine).

although it spouts the usual rubbish about cameras solving all the problems and how 77% of people asked want them everwhere it does at least give you all the locations and tells you to study them because these are accident blackspots and they want you to slow down at these locations.

The A77 is one of the few roads i actually agree with them sticking cameras on, 4 lanes with no central reservation winding through the countryside and very prone to fog, ice etc etc.

The number of people getting killed each year made scary reading and i had a v.close shave on it myself when some nutter lost the back end on one of the corners and spun into oncoming traffic.

Hey, there's got to be at least 1 camera in the UK with purpose other then as an outdoor piggy bank for the constabulary!

And how exactly will adding a speed camera prevent these accidents?

Sounds like a proper central reservation would be much more sensible, but these don't make money do they

Smeggy,

I see you have contributed good points to the A77 forum, is there any chance of anyone reading it?
Again I will say it, breaking the speed limit has v.little if nothing to do with safety on this road or most roads.
I covered over 20000 miles on this road in the last 2 years and outside of the roadworks i doubt I was ever below the speed limit yet i never came close to an incident, well i had a dodgy stomach one day and.....

well, you looked at it taking the number of views of that post to a grand total of……15

As has been pointed out, anyone who's just browsing will only see the 'Engineering' forum because the 'General Discussion' forum is hidden until you've signed up and logged in.
So now I have posted in both just to make sure

The worst part of the A77 used to be the stretch across the moors, for the reasons given above. Of course, they've just opened a nice shiney motorway to cover that stretch. What bets they don't exclude that part of the A77 from the 'before' stats when they trumpet the success of the cameras in 12 month's time?

That's not the bit the SPECS are on. That bit has been replaced by the new M77.

They are further south on the proper dual carriageway bit, then south of Ayr on the single carriageway bit.
