Hi all,

My partner's nan, who is 89 has just had her purse stolen from her bag. In it was £200 cash and her bank card. They have got her pin number, presumably from looking over her shoulder but she reckons nobody was around, only a 'smartly dressed man' who used the machine before her and walked off. They withdrew a further £300 and spent another £300 in various shops so total around £800 before we could get the card cancelled.
Is she stuffed with regards to getting anything back? Bank is Nationwide. Thanks

Turns out now she had the pin number written down but 'as part of an address and with the numbers the wrong way round'.

Looks like you should be able to get the money refunded, depending on exact circumstances.

the thing is it is theft, how they did it, well i wouldn't worry. it is not unreasonable for an older person to write it down, and she didn't intentionally reveal it. 800 quid to a bank is nothing, probably a lunch sess, so i wouldn't worry.

For future maybe work out how she can use contactless and less cash to help.

''UK card customers are protected against loss or fraud by the Banking Code which says that you are covered as long as you haven't acted negligently or fraudulently. One of the things the Banking Code regards as negligence is writing down your pin."

The argument is, an older person who may have memory issue would be unfairly discriminated by a code such as this. vulnerable consumers should be treated differently and it might be prudent to contact the bank on her behalf to remind them of there legal responsibilities in these matters.

Remember never lie, stick to truths.

More to the point, you mention an address but is that her address and were the keys to the house in the bag as well?

If so get the locks changed ASAP.

Luckily they didn't take the keys. Thanks for all the advice everyone. Will update once I hear what's happened with the bank.

Just wanted to update this thread to say that Nationwide covered the money in full, so well done to them!

Normally they would have in these situations where the pin has been written down even in a hidden format

As i stated older people obviously can't remember everything, and as a company they cannot unfairly treat vulnerable people.

Good news. There’s some proper scum about. My neighbour went to cash
Point and was followed in her car, someone bumped her lightly at the lights, out they all got, all apologetic, distracted her, false details exchanged, got back in and her bag had gone with 300 quid in it from the cash point. She’s 78

Glad to hear that. My MiL got caught at Morrisons by someone who shoulder surfed her PIN and then dipped her purse. She got the withdrawals covered, but they didn't cover the cash she had just got back on the transaction. As she is in her 90s I am very glad they only dipped her purse and didn't resort to a more direct approach. Bank was Barclays.
