Chaps, selling a car with a plate I want to keep (not private) and I'm a little confused on the form to fill in.
Gone for option B which and filled it out all in my name, do I then fill out the V5c in new keepers name, send them both off and if option B of the registration form is all in my name, does the plate come back to me and new keeper get a new V5 in their name?

You need to put it on retention before you sell the car.

On this form part B section 4, it says o can change V5 to new keeper and have plate sent to me, or that's how I understand it

You can use that to transfer the reg to another vehicle but you have to be the RK of both at the point you do it as far as I understand it.

had to do the same recently , you cant do both at the same time otherwise you risk losing you private plate to the buyer.
you will:
1. have to put the current plate on retension you can do this online and its the quickest option.
DVLA will issue a new V5C to the you / RK in approx 5 days.

2. at this point once you have the new V5C in your name and the car back onto a normal plate, you can now sell the car and transfer ownership etc.

Yes, exactly that.

Edited to add: Avoid doing anything by post, it can take weeks/months due to staff shortages and Covid.

My understanding of the V317 option B is I could make changes to keepee as wel, either way, purchaser is going to take the plate off for me, and send it back so should be ok.

As has been said put the number on retention BEFORE you sell the vehicle, as part of this process YOU undertake to change the number plate on the vehicle to the new number the DVLC allocate (will be shown on the new V5 they issue for the vehicle). You have to get the new plates and fit them before you sell the vehicle. You do not want to have to explain to the Police why a car drove past a camera at speed with your number fitted because you didn't comply with this requirement.

Selling the vehicle without either (1) putting number on retention or (2) transferring the number onto another vehicle you own means you lose all rights to the number.

Ownership/possession of the 2 bits of plastic that are screwed to the car is irrelevant.

The relevant section, if you wish to change keeper you can do so, I have an agreement with buyer who is going to take plate off as soon as new V5 arrives for him, because I have to post the form being a pre 98 car and it's not a private reg.

You do realise that as soon as you do the vehicle ownership transfer you lose any rights to that registration?

Put it on retention BEFORE you sell the vehicle.

As above. All well and good agreeing in principal to trust that the buyer will take your plate off once he gets the V5 but that's working on the assumption that they will actually do it.

I can remember a few threads (and posts within existing reg transfer threads) on here over the years where the seller has agreed exactly what is happening here and then run into issues. Think they're normally along the lines of buyer gone quiet / blanked them / unresponsive and kept the plate, told the seller if they want the plate back then it will cost them £xxx to do so, and so on.

This. Do it online as it's instant. The End.

I want to do a similar thing but not selling the vehicle.

I want to keep the original plate (place on retention)

Put on a personal plate bought for me (assign the new plate to my car)

All done online I'm presuming.

Is this correct?

OP sorry for hijack.

Yes - but you will need to wait for the new V5C for each stage. DVLA does seem a lot quicker these days to issue when doing these thing online, so you should be sorted in a couple of weeks.

Pits - Unless you know and trust the buyer, be prepared to lose your plate. By selling and registering the car with the buyer, they will have legal ownership of the plate, not you. If the plate has financial or sentimental value, you are taking a huge risk.

Conversely, I have just done this for the seller of a car I've bought recently, the agreement was that I would register the car in my name, put their plate on retension (their cost) and return it to them once all the DVLA paperwork was sorted. I would like to think I'm a trust worthy individual. Thousands out there are not. Personally, i would not have done this if it was my plate.

It only takes 3 to 5 working days to get a new V5C if you put your plate on retension - why would you not do this and risk losing your plate?

Just to join in with words of caution, if things were normal at the DVLA then it might be worth taking a risk and doing it all in one go. But for various reasons, the staff at Swansea aren't exactly at their most efficient right now. (I might nominate that sentence for the Understatement of the Year awards.)

Keep things simple, do one process at a time and do it online. Do it before you sell the car. Do it before you advertise the car for sale.

Just incase OP is still pondering this - the thread below, from yesterday, highlights the risk of letting your plate go on a car, rather than getting it retained before sale.

To back up what's been said here with a real-life example: I bought a newer car in April. Before doing anything I placed the number from the old car on retention online - it was instant and I had the V5c 3 days later. Upon collecting the newer car on a Saturday the dealer undertook the ownership transfer. The V5c for the newer car arrived on the following Friday and within 20 mins of opening the envelope I had transferred the plate to the newer car online. I already had plates (from the older car) so after a 3 minute call to my insurers I was good to go smile

Always worth pre-warning insurers that you are going to change plates on purchase. My experience is they generally waive the change fee if you tell them up front.
