Hi folks,
I just watched this on YouTube, being an avid follower of Ashley.
For what it's worth, I definitely think there are several things the cyclist could have done better. However, and perhaps more significantly, the driving and the driver's attitude afterwards, seemed really poor to me and I'm somewhat confused at the police response.
Thoughts?

Thoughts?
If the cyclist had followed the Highway Code and used the lane closest to the near side available to him (the cycle lane) the Fiesta would have passed him and been clear well ahead of the point of actual collision.
That said, at the point they did collide, it did seem as if the Fiesta was trying to ‘crowd’ the cyclist into the near side so that he could execute a late lane change into the near side lane. The cyclist could/should have been more aware of the traffic around him and less dogmatic about maintaining his position in his lane. It’s all very well being in the right but, as the cyclist, youre going to be the one going home with skinned hands and knees, written off kit and a knackered bike

Cycle lanes are optional aren't they?Those narrow ones on the side of the road are sometimes positively dangerous.
Not that there was one by that point, as above.
terrible driving, the cyclist is in no way required to use that pointless cycle "lane", which ended well before the collision. the traffic was stop start so driver would have lost nothing by hanging back. also the merge was just shocking, "i left you plenty of space", yeah that's clearly what the video shows. A safe overtake giving the cyclist the lane....

Had I been in that situation on my cycle, I definitely would've tried to back off as soon as I noticed the fiesta playing funny beggars (but that still doesn't excuse the driving IMHO).

Moot point. Judged on what was in the video. Car at fault for that accident.

My understanding is that they are optional and Dft advice is to not use them if you're maintaining greater than 15 mph on your cycle (or something of that ilk).

I wish I could say I'd likely have backed off.
The cycle lane is a red herring really. The biker doesn't need to use it and it had actually ended before the woman tried the overtake.
The cyclist was keeping up with traffic fine and wasn't holding up cars behind him.
The woman being a ex-police officers means she should know better, the fact that it's been brushed under the rug by the police is shocking. She showed no remorse and wouldn't even entertain the fact she may have been at least partially to blame.
The cyclist could have mitigated the situation by stopping once the car comes along side but this is 100% the woman's fault to me.

If the cyclist had used the cycle lane, he would have been up the inside of the Audi and in conflict with the car turning into the side road from the other direction, so instead used some good sense at the end of the cycle lane and came up behind the Audi. The Fiesta doesn't catch the cyclist until the end of the cycle lane anyway.

What was the purple haired buffon hoping to achieve? Being 5 metres ahead in the arse of the Audi? Completely pointless.
Cyclists should have been considering his own safety alittle better though he wouldn't have had to if the Fiesta was driving better.
