Saw an M4 Scamera today - for the first time since it went live. A couple of miles further down the road was an apparently dead biker :(. So far as I can tell the Hyundai that hit him just seemed to have gone straight through him from behind - no skid marks, severe front offside damage to the car, rear end damage to the Triumph Thunderbird. The biker probably never knew what hit him. No doubt this Wiltshire Scamera Partnership will decide that this was speed related...

The Hyundai driving was probably doing the speed limit, but not concentrating on the road, but concentrating on looking at his speedo and cameras.

He probably was doing the speed limit. The fact that there was no skid marks suggests he was fast asleep at impact (although I have no way of knowing this for sure).
Can speed cameras catch drivers who are unfit through fatique?

so what is the 'trigger speed' for the M4 cameras? Is it 79, like the Cumbria Pratnership, or 82 - 85'ish like the M25 near Heathrow?
Does anyone know for sure?

Re: lack of skid marks, surely in this day & age where even poverty spec mini hatchbacks have ABS, police accident investigators must be having a much harder time calculating impact speeds?

They can increase the likelihood of this sort of thing happening by forcing drivers to drive at a slower speed for longer - especially the ones that operate at night. When are the outfits that target motorways going to get ideas like this through their thick heads? All I hear from them are moronic chants of 'Slow is good'!

I think this deserves a news item on its own, scamera about so the numpty driver concentrates on speed alone & the consequences are there for everyone to see. May the chap RIP poor soul.

Disgusting that people are forming opinions from such a vague description of the accident. Someone died there, leave it out!
