In CLEAR road conditions on a 3-lane motorway with the middle & outside lanes free of traffic, good lane discipline/consideration and doing nothing daft, how likely are you to being pulled over for doing 89mph?

I have been setting the cruise control with a road angel to 89mph, largely to reign in any impulse to go over this speed and have wondered if so far I have just been lucky and my clean(ish) licence is about to take a hit??

An electronic enforcement device has no programme for discretion whereas a human has.

On the later .......depends.

There was a cop on one of those police programs on beeb last week who was sitting in his (unmarked) volvo up a slip road doing speed checks - bit sly, as he was definitely not visible, but he did say that "85mph - too slow for me" which I thought admirable.

It would depend on the day, the circumstances, the attitude you gave and the side of bed the bib got out on if stopped for at 89mph!

If I followed you for 2 or 3 miles or you passed me and failed to slow down at 89mph and you had not noticed (you would not believe the number of people who do not notice ), you may well get the benefit of my discretion. At that speed, it would most probably be a FPN!

About 5 or 6 years ago, I got pulled on the A1 in Bedfordshire at just after midnight on December the 21st. It was a clear night, the road was virtually empty and I was cruising at around 90. One of the very few cars that I overtook turned out to be an unmarked police car and he pulled me about 5 miles down the road. He asked me if I knew the speed limit and what my speed had been so I told him that I thought I might have been just a little over it. His reply was, "I estimated your speed to have been, let's be conservative and say, 80 ish..."

He then went on to say that he didn't consider my driving to have been dangerous, the visibility was good, the road dry with virtually no traffic but, as I had admitted a moving traffic offence which he intended to do no more about, in view of the time of day and time of the year, would I give a breath sample. Which I happily did.

That's what I like about trafpol, discretion and common sense prevailed. As DVD says, a scamera doesn't do that, 89 mph = NIP.

i got nicked on a deserted m74 doing 89 mph by a scamera,

i feel the lesson learned has been invaluable to improving my road safety, the £60 I contributed to the policemans ball was well worth it , and i write this a truly chastened man.

tonight I am going to play loud music until 3 am, hang around the street corners with my hoody up drinking cider and sniffing glue whilst contemplating burglarising my neighbour hood - and then i am off on a trip to kenya, courtesy of the state..

If they were all like that we'd be much better off.

A nice friendly warning to be careful does wonders for your driving. £60 and three points and threats of court action just piss you off.

In my experience, exceeding unlikely.

Mind you, the conditions you impose occur so infrequently that it all makes it a bit academic.

For the record, many coppers have posted on here that they only start to issue FPNs for 90 mph and above.

Why not suck it and see ?

If you get a ticket, then you will pay the 60 quid, and your insurance costs might go up.

However, so many millions of motorists now have points on their licences that most insurance companies now ignore the first three points, only doing the loading for six points.

Compare and contrast the 60 quid with the amount of time saved.

I was pulled over by the traffic boys last week on the Darlington by-pass, which is a very wide single carriageway, punctuated by roundabouts.

I'd just pulled away from a roundabout, pretty enthusiastically (virtually no traffic about), when upon glancing in my mirror I noticed a Volvo Traffic car.
I immediately dropped down to 60.

They were very pleasant, and after pointing out that I'd hit 90, suggested that I take it easy, and off they went without a producer or FPN.

I was impressed, and I got the message.

Edited to add:

They were also slightly disturbed at the flames coming from the exhaust at gear changes.
I didn't know that,and must say, I'm quite chuffed !

Suspect that I was caught yesterday on M6 Southbound and on my motorbike.

Busy watching a coach who had left his right indicator on, as I was overtaking him and ooops - smile please.

The van had windows on each side so I guess he'll get the plate number from the other side window.

13 days to go?

I too set the cruise control, but at 79 MPH on the Road Angel, just on the 10% limit, an indicated 83-84 on the speedo, might start using 85MPH on the RA, probably indicating about 90MPH.

Depnds if i'm brave enough though!!

Interesting

I go up and down the M40 pretty often and know (or perhaps knew if they've changed recently) a couple of unmarked police cars. Probably inappropriate to identify them on here.

First one I saw was while I was doing about 85mph overtaking a car in the outside lane. The middle lane car was only doing about 5mph less so it took a while to get past i.e. plenty of time to clock my speed.

I pulled over and the unmarked car went past. I didn't know it was BiB until 1/2 mile later I saw it had stopped a yoof in an old BMW. Made me chuckle since minutes earlier the same yoof had sat on my bumper before flying past me, mobile stuck to his ear.

Good to see that there are reasonable police out there who understand that, on its own, speed is not necessarily dangerous.

It's a shame that the view is not shared by the money grabbing "Safety" Camera Partnership in South Wales. My 3 points (first and only) were for 83mph on a clear light traffic'd M4 (on the bridge by Jct 35).

What hurt even more was that I followed one of the same Scamera vans driving across the toll bridge at (a GPS verified) 85mph!!!!! That made me so cross.

Should have used the coach as a screen as you went past.
