Just bought a brand new 71 plate car. It isn't showing up yet on DVLA and so the insurance company cannot find the car via a registration plate search. Wouldn't be a problem, but the trim level of car (Focus ST Edition) isn't showing up either, so my insurance company have had to assign the registration to the base Focus ST which leaves me feeling uneasy! How long does it normally take for brand new registrations to appear on the DVLA database, especially for 1st March and 1st September releases?

It’s not unusual for them not to show.

I had exactly the same with Admiral a few months ago. Got a brand new black edition A6 with Tech Pack, reg not showing and trim only up to S-Line on the engine I had. The Black Edition has upgraded alloys, black pack and the tech pack a whole host of goodies.

I had a few live chats with them, they were quite blase about the whole thing saying just pick the lower trim it’ll be fine! In the end I got a full written statement from them saying they were happy of the differences in the trim levels and the policy would cover.

Get it in writing!

i had a brand new limited spec van a few years ago and it never updated with my insurer.

In fact, it kept coming back as an auto as well come renewal and that never changed so i just asked the insurance company to send me a letter confirming the correct vehicle details.

Seeing as the garage either only taxed it yesterday or today it will not show for a few days.

Also it can take two weeks for the DVLA to populate external websites with data so do not be concerned at this stage, or at all. You'll get a V5C within the week.

Aren't Admiral one of the companies that has a strange approach to optional (factory fitted) extras?

There terms when I read them were you must declare ALL factory options, which is at complete odds with what you could add on the list they provided online.

When I asked for clarification on how to declare this required information, it seemed like they thought I was being contentious. In the end it was only resolved by them providing a written optional cover statement.

I found it strange that although they clearly request this information and stress that cover may be void if incorrect, they didn’t actually have the systems in place nor did they seem too concerned with it being incorrect.

All very well until they decide your claim isn’t being honoured because you didn’t declare everything correctly.

Just send them the Ford build-sheet to cover your backside, surely. It means very little to most people but at least you'll have done your bit.
