A14 huntingdon
Discussion
It's incredibly dangerous. It was bad enough before they opened the A14 up to the Midlands, but now it's terrible. It also has two of arguably the worst junctions in Britain......
I'm amazed *anyone* can get up to 70 on there, let alone 80 - except at 4 AM maybe !
However, it is a brilliant permanent example of why Scameras are dangerous ; the traffic, inevitably doing about 50-60ish, is ripple braked at every camera.

I also noticed that after they installed new scamera warning signs with big NSL signs attached that a lot of people slow to sixty!!!
How can so many people be such cretinous drivers?
Well the limit was 60 for a while during the oil crisis. How well publicised was the change back? Of course it's in the highway code, but that's not quite as well read as p3 of the Mirror is it?
Like the guy recently in the news who assumed that the limit was 40 as he was on a rural A-road. We need more public information films rather than anti-speeding propaganda.
Sunday drivers issued with 'lead footwear' shock horror.
Not sure thats a good idea, with some of the senior generation, might improve the natural selection.
A bad road all around though, the junctions the services, the need to escape Cambridgeshire, at any costs, its a potent motive really

It's the scameras that have made it more dangerous. I used to run up and down that stretch at a ton almost every day without incident. In went the scameras and it became like an episode of Wacky Races
It needs SPECS like a hole in thehead

Yep, it's an absolutely awful stretch of road which has deteriorated recently. Of course widening the road costs money so we can't have that, even though that is the best way to improve safety.

Ah, but our cameras face the (correct) direction, and are therefore fairer, by being easier to detect, than the sneaky egg-head Cambridge sort

While we are on the subject of the A14 and how dangerous that road is, how about the northbound M11/A14 interchange?
How anyone can come up with a junction like that is beyond me!
Drive up that way every Monday afternoon have given up making progress and drive that stretch VERY defensively.
Absolutely horrible road even Southbound at 3 AM on a Friday morning.
MoJo.

Because it used to basically just be two roads crossing each other, the A45 (now A14/A428) and the M11/A604 (now A14)
Traffic from the east going west would keep on going through St Neots and Northampton or Bedford to get to the Midlands and North West, the A14 didn't exist, you could travel that way but it was a real wander through Market Harborough and Kettering - traffic would head for the D2 at Higham Ferrers.
North/South traffic (M11/A1) just carried on as well.
There was a bit of traffic that headed North East up the A1 off the ex A45 but that was all. Even then, the old A604/A14 was a pretty awful road and the lower junction was a deathtrap. The upper junction was okay (except for a miniroundabout at Brampton !)
Then they upgraded the A604 to Kettering and built the link to the M6, and now this D2 has virtually all the traffic, as all the M11/A1 and A14 traffic is wedged onto this one poor quality D2.
It's another cheap-but-who-gives-a-f*** job ; it's obvious that that junction and the M6/M1/A14 junction wouldn't cope.
There are worse....... if you visit the CBRD website there is this quite amazing thing in Skelmersdale.

At the risk of being geeky, I find it amusing that someone actually sat down and designed this bizarre junction.
It works worse than you might think, because to enter or leave you go round the loop to the other side.
If you leave travelling to the right across this picture, you go round the loop, down under the motorway, round the bottom loop, and up again.
