Purchased a car a couple of years back from a small time dealer that I found via Autotrader. Being younger and stupider I did not carry out a HPI check.

The car was not flagged on Autotrader as Cat s, I received no info of this from the seller nor is it referenced anywhere on the paperwork.
Now that I am coming to sell the car the issue has presented itself. Do I have any recourse here or is this just a lesson I have to take on the chin?

If you are selling a car privately you do not have to declare any insurance category.

Surely your insurance company would have known it was Cat S? What does your policy documentation say?

Company still exists

I have never had any trouble insuring the vehicle previously

Now strangely enough I have just bought a check from the AACarCheck website and it tells me there are no adverse findings against the reg provided.

Do different agencies have different data or am I in the clear here?

Has it had a private reg in it at some point? That can cause some confusion if the same reg has been on a written off car at some point.

Now that you are aware it is Cat S, and if for some reason your insurance doesn’t know, you might want to think about telling them if you don’t end up selling it. Otherwise you just might find yourself uninsured for failing to disclose.

Somebody will be along in a minute to tell me why I’m wrong but anyway, just trying to save an even bigger potential headache.

Not as far as I'm aware but is there any way I can check this?

The most comprehensive check I have ever been able to get is here https://www.vcheck.uk/

Includes salvage history.

You're wrong :-)

You don't need to disclose the information to your insurance company, they will know when you need to claim and make the appropriate payment

Been there and done it.

In 50 years of insuring vehicles, I have never, ever been asked if the car had a Cat marker, and we have had several Cat C & D over the years.

It's not a question on any of the proposal forms; I'm fairly certain that the Insurance would know, and adjust any claim accordingly, however.

I bought a report from here
https://www.theaacarcheck.com/
This has come back clean so I have gone back to the buyer/agent (Motorway) to ask for the details of their report so we can try and find any variance.

Hopefully just an admin error somewhere down the line.
