How to find out when I received a speeding fine?

I have looked online on my driving license record as I am currently renewing my car insurance and it asks if I have had any fines in the last 5 years.
I cant remember when my speeding fine was exactly, it could be 2017, or maybe 2018.

The online record just shows me that I have no points, and doesn't show expired points to know when they were given.

I assume, even though the points have expired from my driving license, I still need to inform the insurer?

The only information given on my license history page is:

You have
0 current penalty points

Is there another easy way of finding out when I had received the fine?

The sensible thing is to keep your own records, otherwise try calling the force who caught you - if you can remember who it was.

It sounds strange but how can you show your insurers anything but a clean licence? By that I mean how can they take your word for it over an official, clean licence record?

Was it on there before?

I'm not sure about this, I'm not a lawyer, but I seem to remember a similar thread a few years ago which concluded that if "the conviction is spent" ie your points have been removed, then the insurance company has no legal right to ask you about "spent conviction" therefore it would be perfectly reasonable (and legal) for you to reply that you haven't had any fines.
Hoping someone with a bit more knowledge can confirm.

Its strange that with everything being online now, it seems there's no trace of any points.

I assumed that by logging into the governments own portal that it would show the whole history of points even if they had expired.

Is it correct that points are valid for 3 years but stay on license for 4 years so if they are no longer showing its got to be at least 4 years old?

I am worried that if I took out insurance and further down the line I have an accident and it turns out the points were given at 4.5 years from now that they will know and void it.

There has got to be some central database that is available so insurers can see points that are no longer on the license, and it would be handy to see that as a consumer to know I am correctly taking out insurance as there is no aim to defraud, I just dont know.

According to the government site (and other Google hits) driving endorsements are spent after 5 years in the majority of cases. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rehabilitation-periods

So you aren’t wrong about not being able to ask about spent convictions but they are in line with the 5 years.

I've just put in my details with an insurer for a quote and they either ask me for me to enter my driving information manually or provide my driving license number.
I have put my driving license number in and they have populated the information for me and is showing no spent points.

Endorsements for speeding offences stay on your DVLA driving record for 4 years from offence date.

3 years from offence date, they are marked 'expired.'

4 years from offence date, they are removed.

Look at previous years insurance documents - you must have declared the points for the last couple of years.

IIRC it used to be
3 years to count for totting up
4 years to stay on licence
5 years to need to declare to insurers


but I'd love to know if this could be confirmed.....

and it says ‘You have 0 current penalty points’, that is it. No need for more faffing about. You can share that via that system if you wish.

Can you recall where you were going, where you lived, what you were driving etc. Might help narrow it down and help you find payment on bank account ?

This is what mine currently says. But I am sure its because the points are 4 years old, not quite 5 years yet.

The strange thing is one insurance quote I did asked me for 5 year history of penalty charges, but then said if unsure go to that link. So if I put what I saw on that link I would be committing insurance fraud because although it says no points, I did get some within 5 years go

Thank you - I tracked it down through a bank transaction search which showed it as Feb 2017

For anyone interested the difference on the policy is £335 with the SP30 , and £305 without. So not a huge difference to worry about

Date of conviction if you are willing to believe the government website. I accept this won’t be flawless so don’t shoot the messenger. It would make sense in line with other offences in the main I guess.
