This guy parked his X6 in the disabled space at my local Sainsbury's, had a quick look around to see nobody was watching, and marched briskly off into the store to do his shopping. No blue badge.
Is this illegal, or one our great country's many annoying legal loopholes being exploited by him?

Its not on street or council run parking so its antisocial.
Technically even council or street parking has been decriminalised.
He might get one of those parking charge notices - and to be fair, if he is not disabled, he deserves one and to be chased to the end of the earth for payment.
He's only parking there because hes an entitled prick and too lazy to park elsewhere. The look round to see if anyone had seen proves it.

How did you know he was not eligible to use the spot?I fully agree that not all mobility disabilities are immediately visible. The test for getting a blue badge in how far can you walk unaided, not can you walk at all. It was the way he strode off into the store and didn't display a blue badge that called him out.
I have a disabled daughter with a blue badge, and she has good days and bad days.
On the bad days she can't even get into the car. On moderate days she uses the badge. On the good days she leaves the spaces for those who need them. The car park was fairly full. Two disabled drivers could easily have turned up while he was in the store. He certainly was in there longer than I was.
But ignoring this person - the question I was asking was in general - is it some sort of offence, or merely offensive to others?

Depends on the policy of the stores. Planning types on there can advise but think the spaces (or equivalent) are required under the equalities act - also the latter is not specific to 'blue badge' scenarios. The bloke could have been a dick or could have legit use of it. Judging that someone does not look eligible to use a disabled marked space is not great IMHO.
Antisocial sadly, and if it isn't the disabled spot it's the parent and child spot, which is extra annoying when you have to use a regular spot, holding your door open as far as it will go whilst trying to get your minion into the massive child seat and buckled up.
I've had several verbals with people abusing them, and they simply give you a gobful and drive/walk off. They'll never change.

I can't remember the number of cars I ticketed for parking in a handicapped parking bay. It was $329 a pop, but may have gone up. Had quite a few towed as well and it was amazing how many handicapped people came up and thanked me for freeing up the parking bay for them.

Probably the right answer!If he was really worried about scratching his car he would park at the far end of the carpark, where nobody else parks because its a whopping 200 metre walk.
Im surprised he didnt put his hazard lights on. Plenty of people here think they can park where they want, including in the middle of the road, if they put their hazards on,
