Drivers to be banned from using hand-held devices

UK drivers will be banned from filming or searching playlists on hand-held devices from next year under government plans to toughen road safety laws.

At least if the law is there it's available for enforcement should the appropriate authorities choose to do so. Also there's quite a lot of people who obey laws even without the threat of being caught.

I am sure it’s been mentioned on here before, but it’s certainly not unexpected.

You shouldn’t need to be fiddling with a phone for phone calls whilst driving, as hands free connectivity has been a thing for over a decade and aftermarket devices are cheap.

You are still allowed to use the devices Sat Nat as well.

If you see traffic on the other side of the road, it’s always plain to see that a huge proportion of the stopped traffic are in their phones. Us humans have a particular “look” when we are staring down at the devices.

It does grate the st out of me that connectivity capability for phones is the best it has ever been (CarPlay, android auto, voice assistance) yet so many people don’t seem to make use of it.

No idea how this is going to be pursued really.

What amazes me is the amount of people in cars that will have Bluetooth, using their phone as a phone but still holding it, either as one should when making a call, or in that really annoying Apprentice style with it on loud speaker.

I’ll not be risking 6 points and £200 fine.

Quite.

Just common sense, don't see any downside.

Provided it is in a cradle. This should enable enforcement to be simpler with camera evidence.

So it needed a specific law and penalty to stop you from doing something that is clearly irresponsible ?

What is the penalty for "Driving without due care & attention"? Surely this already covers what the new law is aimed to cover?

Cycling Mikey and other cameras will be having a field day in London. At the moment they have to show on their video that the phone is being used for communications, from next year a video of someone just holding their phone should do the job.

I think phone sat nav can still be used though, as I do with Waze due to having a 15 year old shed smile

Same for mobile phone use in general but by making it a specific fixed penalty offence its easier to prosecute than DWDC.

You've always been allowed to operate your cars controls with your hands. Just because it's a screen doesn't change things.

Phones are a problem because not only do they have all your messaging and media apps on them, people hold them in their hands to use them. It's distracting you mentally and physically.

As long as the phone is in a cradle you can use it for sat nav, music, calls etc

However, since Google got rid of the ability to unlock your phone using voice commands, i'm not sure on the legality of setting destinations, changing tracks etc as you will have to touch your phone to unlock it.

You can set the phone to be unlocked when connected to a trusted device (paired to the cars bluetooth for instance) from Android 10 onwards.

I think this is a good idea as now the nights have drawn in you can see the glow emanating from peoples laps when they use their phones, I wonder if in part that's why companies like Mercedes have included tacky mood lighting coming from the doors and footwells so Police can't tell if it's a phone or the built in car lighting.

Personally I would ban phones entirely from cars, sat navs only.

Phones are always a distraction, and even when people are speaking using hands free a large percentage of them are concentrating more on their call than on driving, you can see it a mile off.

We all managed to live our lives, run businesses well enough before mobile phones, we can all carry on doing so in my view, some would suffer, but they would just need to adjust
