Horrible story, poor kid.

How do the sentences get decided? I know they are reviewing them and trying to get the horrible s a whole life term, but what circumstances surrounding the case warrant the sentences given?

They should be left to rot in solitary confinement.

The Sentencing Council establishes Sentencing Guidelines that determine how sentences should be applied taking into account several factors about the crime and perpetrators. This may include the background of the perpetrators and whether there was influence from this on their actions, their state of mind, etc.

It's up to a judge to determine what is most appropriate for each case drawing from the range of options available but can veer beyond these guidelines if they feel it appropriate to do so but only by so much.

But solitary? I would have though in with the general prison population, and the warders turning a blind eye would be more fitting.

Judges apply sentencing guidelines within minimum and maximum sentences set by parliament.

Sentencing guidelines are published by The Sentencing Council.
