Apologies for the dumb questions but this is a new experience for me.
I have been served documents for a county court claim against me, relating to a debt that I paid off in September last year. I did receive a letter in October last year from a debt collector still requesting the amount but replied to say it had been paid and sent a bank statement as evidence, I've not heard anything else since and considered the matter closed; until the court documents arrived last week.
I have recently been using a solicitor regarding another matter, so my gut is that I should go to them for legal advice, but I'm a little loathe to spend a fair chunk of money on this when it is seemingly so clear cut. (What can I say? My dad's a Yorkshireman).
If I seek legal advice will that cost be recoverable from the other side assuming my defence is successful?
What happens if the claimant withdraws their case, can I still recover costs from them?
Is it worth asking them directly to withdraw the claim before doing anything else?
The court documents say I have 14 days to respond, is that calendar days or working days?

How much is the claim for? Small claims limit is now £10k for financial claims. If it falls inside this, you won’t be able to reclaim any legal costs.
If it is a small claim, it’s easy to defend. Make sure you file your Acknowledgement of Service in good time otherwise the Claimant can get judgment in default.
