Van damaged insurance buy back
Discussion
Hope this is the correct section.
Someone pulled out and I ran into them in my 2006 combo van I've spent a few quid getting her mechanically sound and she's good bodywork wise etc.
Damage to my van is few little dents in bonnet and numberplate crack and bumper scuffed that's it.
Insurance have said its not worth repairing, so need an engineer report first but its likely non Economical to repair
I've asked if I can buy it back but I'm not sure how it all works...
I would literally do nothing other than a new numberplate and it's fine
Say it was £1000 value £200 excess £100 engineer report so they pay out 700
Then they offer me the van for a figure they think is fair and its upto me to buy back?
Am I understanding it correctly?

I was wondering if I could do that..
I'm not worried about the value it's probably. As low as it will get now being an old van, and will keep it until I run it into ground.
So am I still worth claiming and getting something paid out and buying it back for a couple hundred? My insurance will no doubt be affected regardless so is it worth being paid out something rather than nothing if that makes sense as long as I can keep the van of course

Claiming just seems like a load of hassle to me. The van is what it is. Can’t see it making you a load of money and you don’t even know how much they’d offer you or if they’d let you get it back. Just one of those to put down to experience. My insurance didn’t go up much the next year but I didn’t do much damage to the other van I hit. They claimed off my insurance but I couldn’t do anything about that.

Would it not be a case of, well he has a claim against him anyway, so may as well put the van through too?unident said:

No idea I just went for the easy option. Just thought it was worth sharing. I've always just wondered if it differentiates between a third party claim and (a third party claim and your own vehicle).
My son went through a fence and in to a womans garden in his first year of driving. His car just needed a bumper and a headlight and we got a same colour bumper and a headlight from a scrap car and had his back on the road the following day. The woman claimed £,£££s for the fence and a tree(!) but we didnt bother putting his car through. I think the parts were like £100 or something.
Well all settled, they paid out and I kept my van I was suprised how easy they accepted my haggle about the value of my van.
I bought all parts I need to fix for £50 today so they be fitted tomorrow and be back to normal! Still can't believe they wrote it off anyway.....
Being a cat N - where do I stand insuraning the car and if I ever had another bump could I claim as normal?
Do I need to send pictures to my insurance if the fixed van?
Do I need to notify dvla at all?
