Guys

Could someone settle an ongoing argument between myself & my old man; He's saying that SPECS photographs who is actually driving the car, the car itself AND the car's reg plate.

I'm saying it's only the reg plate....

I think its just the reg plate, as it works in a similar way to ANPR in that it reads all number plates going through the first camera and the same for the second camera and if X given number plate is averaging over the limit then that plate is flagged and a NIP sent.

Its the front of a car is'ent it, (for proof, that is)

or is it proof enough with oblong plate alone, does anyone have a copy obtained the hard way, that we could see

The actual SPECS camera itself will only capture the (retro reflective) VRM plate, this is usually the only significantly illuminated object in the picture. There will also be a separate ‘colour overview camera’ working in tandem giving details regarding the car (and perhaps the driver but the quality will be poor).

There would be considerable difficulty identifying a driver from the quality of the photographs in the example given.

The interesting thing about specs & how it could be easily foiled is:

It relies on seeing a number plate, it looks for a white rectangular box in its infra red image, many times a frame. If number plates were not reflective & did'nt give that required image return (see the black & white pics) then you could drive along concentrating on hazards instead. Of course that would be naughty & I don't condone driving dangerously.

Any infra red photographers out there care to explain better?

Must agree, especially when considering the VRM camera (usually) works exclusively at invisible wavelengths.
