Is it illegal to drive a car on the roads with the number plate in the window rather than fixed to the car? I presume so.

Idiotic Romanian on shifts who lives below with stupid loud exhaust that wakes me constantly has started doing this, am tempted to send the plod a note!!

Pretty sure its got to be forward of the front axle?

I'm 33 now but have gone through the whole "VW scene" thing from 17 on wards, I however picked the performance scene rather than big Bentley wheels etc.

The one thing that used to make me think what a dick, was people who would remove their plate of the plinth and have it smoothed, then cable tie the plate lower down directly in front of the Intercooler.

Why do you care?

I removed the front plate off my Mustang when i got it home from the dealership 6 months ago (made sure they did not drill the bumper).

Have driven by many police cars, and live 20 seconds from police station. Have not had a single word said to me about the lack of front plate.

The only person who has moaned about it is the old guy at the council tip, as the camera couldn't pick up the plate, and had to check i had a booking manually!

So guess the police don't really care, and suspect they will care even less about a plate in the windscreen.

It's definitely illegal. I think I started a thread on same months back.

I'm amazed that people continue to get away with it. The police simply don't give a fk, quite frankly.

It looks chavvy as hell as well and it's a racing certainty that those who do it are probably committing various other offences too - no insurance, no tax, various other construction and use offences, etc, etc, etc.

I had the front plate from my A series truck in the front window for a couple of years. Mainly due to the front bumper rusting out and falling off leaving no where to bolt it to.

Iirc the plate has to be mounted vertically, somewhere visible and that's probably it.

Pedantic cops will cite the fact that ANPR detection cameras cannot pick the plate up so it's therefore illegal.
Even trade plate drivers get a wigging for having plates in the front or rear windows .

Thanks. I'm still not getting this "vertical" thing though? Plates are fitted horizontally, surely?

It does demonstrate, though, that a plate inside the windscreen is illegal as they must be fitted "on" the vehicle, not within it.

Vertically = standing up on it's edge facing you.
Horizontally = laying flat on it's back

Aye, thicko of the year award goes to me. I took "vertically" as meaning the same as "long side up" if you see what I mean?

Either way, it's definitely illegal to have it on the dashboard. Not to mention horribly chavvy and makes quite a statement about the "type" of people who do it.

Whilst I agree to a certain extent you have no moral compass to be able to judge tbh.

I like these plates. They are another early warning that the driver is a throbber. It’s up there with misted windows, driving with a hoodie up,front tints, boss plates, sat nav in the centre of the screen, ‘4D’ drug dealer plates etc etc etc..

Saw a car with a BO55 plate the other day and thought council straight away, most of the stuff above was true as well.
