Need to be clear with the insurer of what you are doing otherwise if its setup wrong they will say you have no insurable interest and any claim will be invalid.

This. Some insurers won't quote at all, some will quote if you are a close relative of the owner. But you should be able to find somebody who will cover you. Expect to pay more though as most insurers will see non-owners as a higher risk.

The question was about RK, not ownership.
Who owns if OP?

Yes, good point - the distinction can be important. In this case I am assuming that the OP is neither the owner nor the registered keeper although technically that isn't especially important. What the insurers will want to see is that there is an insurable interest in the car.

I'm with NFU and they wouldn't let me in insure a car that I wasn't registered keeper of (It was a car belonging to my son, which he wasn't using and he didn't have it insured)

Some are ok with it.

My partner insured my old car with Direct Line when I got a newer car. The documents said she was neither the owner or keeper.

I still owned the car and nothing had changed other than her now being the main driver so it was the most accurate description.

I didn't have a problem insuring a car owned by the business (and registered there) but in my name and at my home address.
