Hi,

This question has almost certainly been asked before but I'm in need of some advice quite quickly.

I may be picking up a car from a recovery place. I had reason to be believe that the car may not be insured, taxed or MOT'd. Turns out it is, but is only showing up on the various databases under it's original plate, not the personalised plate it is currently on and has been on for a while.

Does the DVLA/DVSA/insurance company need to be informed before it is legal for me to drive that car on the road?

The answer is probably quite obvious but it's been a looooong day already and my head is ready to explode.

I take it this isn't your car, does it matter if it is insured currently? Do you have a trade policy that will cover you?

If the ASK MID database suggests it is insured on the old reg, the owner either didn't update them or never actually applied the reg properly.

Is the MOT and Tax on the private reg?

Thanks for the quick response. Not my car and no trade policy. It's a complicated family issue.

Everything done under the old plate, private plate not showing on anything.

There's a chance the owner has knowingly put the wrong plates on the car for a number of possible reasons. We have now been in touch with the police who have okay'd me driving the car on the wrong plates, I guess they put a note against their vehicle records or something.

Thanks again.

Best ask the insurers just to be sure they're happy for you to be driving - and that there aren't any issues that you may not be aware of.

Databases may not show the latest up-to-the-minute information.

Yes it sounds like they have either put the plates on without the entitlement or was in the process of returning it to original perhaps?

God knows, presumably you are driving on Third Party cover on your own policy. The clauses in that usually dictate the car you are driving is insured, which it sounds like it is, albeit on the wrong reg.

Chances of getting tugged are higher due to the plates coming up empty - whilst the police have ok'd it there are a myriad of other factors still:

-Just because the police OK'd it, doesn't mean your insurer has to
-Even if the police are OK with it, there must be clauses/limitations to this surely - they can't allow an unroadworthy/legal car to be driven by someone knowingly.
-Has the owner given you permission to drive it? Another clause in your insurance is that it would be with permission from the owner. Also it has to be privately owned amongst other things.

You're very unlikely to get a straight forward response from your insurer by the way, if you call - it sounds like the simplest solution is to put the old plates back on so it all matches up before moving it.

Additionally, if the car has no current VED or MoT, you are only 'supposed' to drive it to and from a pre-booked MoT test, or to a place for repairs to pass said test if it fails. You will need a valid MoT to buy VED.

Sitting behind every private plate is the original age related plate issued when the car was first registered.

Obviously if the vehicle's original plate is sold this would not be the case.

Not necessarily. One of my cars was registered with a cherished plate.
