most cars come with the ability to break the speed limit - but it is always the choice of the driver - it could be argued that the driver doesn't have a choice over when their exhaust is louder...

Reading tha article. Not so much 'Big Brother is listening' more like 'Big Brother is listening to the anti-social plankton'

Anyone dim enough to rev the b0ll0cks off their Saxo / Lambo in built up areas deserves what they get.

That said, if these cameras find their way onto my favourite B roads in the middle of no-where . . .

most cars come with the ability to break the speed limit - but it is always the choice of the driver - it could be argued that the driver doesn't have a choice over when their exhaust is louder...

I think the technique used to moderate your speed works pretty well in moderating the noise level too.

I do wonder how the machines work though. Do the properly differentiate between two cars and one car? Do they differentiate between different age cars (eg a 1978 car was built to a 82dB limit)

You then get onto questioning whether its any easier not having a numberplate at all....

Noticed the other week when I'd forgotten to update my number plate on the car itself after a change for nearly 6m (paperwork was all changed over) - despite driving past numerous police cars/cameras across London I've not been pulled over (or received any ticket) once....

Even easier on a motorbike

It's likely that the video and the decibel number will be reviewed by a person for just such an occurrence.

I am sure the people responsible for bringing charges will have timed proof of the noise and just modifying your car after the offence will be well covered. If you are daft enough to be caught for what is anti social behavior when you well understand the laws and rules then you deserve everything you get.

Are antisocially loud exhausts really still a thing anymore? Especially amongst the younger generation of drivers?

Can't remember the last time I saw the equivalent of your once cheap and common Saxo or Corsa Maxpowered up with a silly oversized fart can on the back.

Motorbikes..

Some motorcyclists are a bloody nuisance every summer. They buy a nice bike and the first thing they do is take off a thousand quids worth of exhaust and replace it with a few hundred quids worth of antisocial loud tat. They then go tear arsing off to Finchingfield at 300mph annoying most of Essex in the process.

I own a few bikes and like some bike owners I am very aware of the fact that not everybody wants to hear me wherever I go.

Got to be honest none of them seem that loud.

That said it seems like a lot of money spaffed up the wall for a 'problem' that's disappearing thanks to electric cars. Does seem that we're moving further and further towards a surveillance state

Plenty of cars and bikes through my village are antisocial. Mostly Bikes which you can hear from miles away, they always seem to be stuck in second gear at 12000rpm for some reason. I do live on one of the favorite routes into North Wales so it may be worse than elsewhere.

The article states that "In Britain, the legal limit for noise made by an exhaust is 74 decibels – roughly as loud as a flushing toilet." Bear in mind that it was from Confused.com; the last one of theirs that I read was on 'Acts of God and Insurance' and was total bks. Probably something to do with the fact that the writer's Insurance experience was in Search Engine Optimisation.

The Legislation actually states:-
"In summary, vehicle exhausts must not be altered or replaced in a manner which increases the noise above that emitted by the type approved exhaust fitted by the manufacturer.

In any case the sound emitted by an exhaust fitted to a standard car must not exceed 80dB. Some other vehicles, such as those with differing engine power e.g. HGVs, PCVs, motorcycles, etc. have higher limits up to 89dB."

That's odd because I think that in the last year or two it's become really commonplace. The F1 on steroids with pops and crackles type thing. Not for cheapo cars but for fairly decent models.

You can already be fined for driving a factory spec car too fast or like an idiot.

If you can't work out how to drive the car in a way that isn't inappropriately noisy in an inappropriate location, best not drive at all.

Reading the article, this seems to have been prompted by the knobs treating Kensington as a race-track. I doubt it'll spread much beyond that.
