nip question

Hi guys,

Just got a nip through the post saying I was doing 43 in a 30 zone. My question is, the road I was on is a long national speed limit with, maybe, 400 meters of 30. It doesnt say where they pinged me and I dont recall seeing a van/camera. what options do I have, or should I just take it on the chin.

Take it on the chin.

They will provide proof of the offence if you want it, but it's going to be £100 + 3 pts or a speed awareness course.

I doubt you'd be offered it for the speed vs limit but the speed awareness course can now be done virtually via teams (I assume this is the case nationally and not just force by force) and only takes 1/2 day rather than a full day ... I have mine booked for the end of April

The NIP should detail the road and approximate location of the offence in there somewhere. If you're lucky they'll also give you a URL linking you to a nice photo of your car and other bits such as calibration certificates of their equipment and such.

If you know about the few hundred metres of 30mph limit on the road then that's probably where they got you. Doesn't really matter whether you saw them or not.

Cheers for the quick replies, I'll suck it up and take whats coming. Just annoying that they could have been in the 30 zone but I was just outside in the 60.

Woah there, buttercup!. I dont know if I was speeding. They could have got me while I was in still in the national speed limit zone. I dont know, thats why I asked. .

I am with you on this, every fine has to be fully clarified imo. We cannot have a society where the police or anyone just sends a request for money and we all roll over and pay.

You have fair, decent doubts and that normal feeling we all get of 'why me??' when the fine rolls up. So yes, ask them for full details and clarification.

Having been confronted by TWO policeman some years ago about an alleged motoring offence, one may have made a mistake, then his mate backed him up, when I asked for names and numbers to report them, they backed off, they were lying, so yes I would challenge it most definitely.

Always worth a try.

Would be a lot less confusing if there was just a 30 sign but I assume the fact it’s a NSL area requires both.

Yes, unfortunately 1mph over the course threshold so £100 and 3 points is the likely outcome

It doesn’t need both, either would suffice. Both mean 30 in a built up area.

I have a feeling a lot of people would do 60mph if only the NSL sign was on its own.

TBH I’m ambivalent on this, and would say 30mph on it’s own would be clearer to the majority of road users.

My last NIP (from our Welsh brethren) had a link I could go to get pics for “driver identification” which also had the specific place I was pinged (I knew where it was the camera flashed) have you checked the letter for that?

So many drivers don't bother to re-read the Highway Code or keep up to date after passting their test. Not that this is new information, but alas we don't know what we don't know (or that we've forgotten) do we? Not a dig at you directly, NGee, just an observation I find myself making on here rather frequently - and this is a motoring enthusiast's forum!

That doesn't explain that sign.

30mph, yeah that's the limit. The circle with the black diagonal means national speed limit applies. Which is 60mph on a single carriageway road. In fact if you go back far enough in time, it means unrestricted.
