New registration needed for 2010 car

Hi to all
My partner and I each own a car (registered to the same address) and we wish to transfer the 2010 plate registration number (it is the original assigned number which we like) to the 2015 car. When we do this, we will need a new registration number for the 2010 car as we cant put the 2015 plate on the 2010 car.
I have seen that with the V317 I can transfer the 2010 plate to the 2015 car but I do not know how to get a new 2010 number from DVLC.
Can anybody help please?

Dont do it with forms, that involves humans at Swansea, which is never fun.

That takes the VRM, removes it from the 2010 vehicle, and puts it on a retention certificate. Let DVLA worry about the new 2010 number, they will pick one from the leftovers. They will also check if you CAN take the 2010 one off, before they take money from you.
Once thats done, you get emailed the retention certificate numbers, which you can use with the 2015 V5C to put the plate on the 2015 vehicle.
A few hours of waiting, just enough time to get onto your plate vendor of choice, and get nice new plates made up for the 2010 car. In fact, you could splash out, and get nice new plates for the 2015 car as well
