For speed cameras to remain viable in the long term they must continue to raise revenue. by disqualifying people for speeding offences caught by cameras they are taking off the road their financial supporters, the goverment should decide what the cameras are really there for revenue or saftey if its revenue then make the offence a fixed penalty with no endorsement or, if they are there for saftey then place the cameras in black spots only.

Nice little article in Top Gear mag, by Tiff Needell - drove on the A68 Scotch Corner to Edinburgh road, and counted 21 speed cameras!! I was flashed on the same on that road, clear road, on a bend, in the middle of Keilder Forest, for God's sake!! I think I saw 10 cars on that whole journey - where's the safety issue?

I'm sure they confuse safety with nannying us into driving slower. By that I mean that they litter the country with cameras so that we're gradually beaten into submission and drive slower, all because we can't be trusted not to go silly on a nice stretch of road like the A68. OK, so some of us *can't* be trusted, but that's not the point

nmilton, these are not littered but carefully placed to catch someone speeding on a stretch of road that is generally the safest to do it on, remember the main purpose for these bloody things is to earn revenue, even the inventor of the gatso has expressed concern over the use of them Edited by apache on Wednesday 18th July 07:39

Personally I think there's going to be a revolt against these things over the next couple of years. Police forces are beginning to see the negative effects of too many cameras, the inventors are a bit concerned about their increased (and unregulated) usage and they really don't contribute to the safety argument in any coherent way. The only people who seem to think they're a good think are the manufacturers and the people collecting the revenue.

It already happens here so it's only a matter of time before it gets out of hand. In Sweden or Norway they had to scrap them as drivers were shooting them - apparently a large percentage of the population own rifles and decided to make their feelings felt in no uncertain manner ! However, rather than vandalise the cameras themselves, I wondered about making them more obvious. I would be interested to know if, for example, it's illegal to paint big orange crosses on the road (provided they didn't obscure any road markings or cats-eyes of course) just before you get to a camera site. Just a thought.....

Well, when I say deliberately paint the road..... I was thinking more along the lines of "accidentally" spilling a small pot of paint which just happened to be in the vicinity of a speed camera

Of course "accidentally" but how does one organise enough accidents? Any news on the positions of the 21 cameras on the A68 (no Autocar here!) as I have to drive this (what used to be a great road for blatting) in August?? Help appreciated!
All the cameras (I think) on the A68 have a small section of armco-type barrier round the camera at the edge of the road - you may not see the camera, but you can see the barrier from a couple of handred yards away. Its a bit of a giveaway. Neil

Unfortunately it's both ! We have some forward facing cameras (Truvelo) which are triggered by metal strips in the road and some rear facing ones (Gatsos). The latter always have white measurement lines painted just after the camera which are often easy to see. The Truvelos are a bit more nasty and you can be on top of one before you realise you're going too quickly.

So Does Mr Blair, unfortunately you have to be a Refugee or a Lesbian/Gay to get any cash from them... White, Male, English - Forget it.. One other point is that is 56mph is the most fuel efficient speed, so having every road in the country set at 40 and 50 means we use up more petrol, and give the b****rds yet more revenue ( I can`t help despising the fact that outta 30 odd quid in petrol 22.50 or so goes straight to Two Jags and Co. )

I don't think 56 mph *is* the most efficient. It is just 90km/h (well, near enough). Also the old 75mph economy figure was because Europe use 120km/h. For a change, it isn't the government money grabbing..... Sparks

There is one sure fire ways to avoid being caught by speed cameras. When you receive 'the letter' reply stating that a 'friend' was driving at the time (preferably a bogus one!). Give the address of the local university or use your imagination!! If we all treat the Government with the contempt they deserve they will have to scrap their control freak behaviour. Why not follow the examples of Mandelson, Vas, Archer etc. and lie, it's apparently good enough for them?

I haven't noticed the lesbian/gay community attracting any cash from the government, except in the area of HIV awareness, and precious little at that. Can I suggest you choose your words a little more carefully?

Mmm now that is a sore point now it's been mentioned Refugee/asylum seeker. We are having a problem with that. Pulled a few the other day, they seem to have a habit of going out and buying a £50 banger, no tax,licence/insurance/road sense, etc, etc. When you pull them "can't speak english" what do you do? if you arrest them (sec 25 PACE to veryfy details etc) you have to then wait for an interpreter and solicitor (another drain on the government) and then what happens they have nothing to loose so they carry on, you can't fine them they have no cash and as far as I know the court will not take food vouchers in exchange for fines (mind you they have managed to sus out that the local prostitutes will take them, either for cash or services rendered. Yes I suppose handing out a speeding ticket is easier but boy does it pi** you off when you realise how much of a soft touch this country really is, Right rant mode off!!

Well I would call in a flat bead truck to come and pick them up. Get the truck loaded and drive it to the euotunnel and put them into one of the trains and send them it France caue they arent welcome in this contry in my opinion , dont you think we have enough problems of our own ie the governmen and for those how come in on plains, I say put them on a Dan Air flight and send them back to where they came from and if they want to come here they can go through the proper channels and what happend to the Great Britain I learnt about in history cause now its more like we are a door mat saying "Welcome to the UK please mind the step" as they all wipe there feet I think my rant is over for know, I better have a drink ot two.
