I've been on the A14 a lot recently and somewhere around Junction 33 there are average speed camera signs that look pretty permanent. I can't see any cameras though. Am I being blind or are these signs left over from when there were roadworks there?

I've seen these signs too and I think they are a hang-over from the old average speed system the A14 had from Huntingdon to the east of Cambridge. I think since it has been widened along the bit from the A428 to about J35 the camera posts seem to have gone but....I'm always careful along there anyway. It's always busy so I just keep to 70 and it's done in about 5mins.

I don't believe there are average speed cameras on what is the upgraded / realigned stretch of the A14 between Cambridge and the A1 - there is the massive sign as you join the A14 from the M11, but AFAICS it has been left in place as a deliberate ploy to try to fool drivers who don't travel the route regularly into driving more slowly than they might otherwise choose to 'oversight' following completion of the upgrade works.

The only cameras I have seen are the fixed-point cameras stuck out of the left of a few gantries, with the 'three tubes on a pole' road furniture / cameras in the verge just before them (which I presume/understand is used to capture the speed limit in force on the signs at the same time as an image of a vehicle speeding past the gantry).

There are also 'Camera not in use' signs at some of the gantries, but I have seen them flash on occasion so they definitely are working, even if they are not enforcing (??) right now.

Could they be linked to create an Average Speed system? I don't know. Entirely possible, I'd have to look up the make/model/Type Approval for the cameras.

Someone on the SABRE forum or on here might know for definite.

The reason they're not currently enforcing is you can't have variable speed limits on a non motorway. Legislation is going through eventually... https://www.roads.org.uk/index.php/blog/missing-m
