they "inspire me" judge,
Discussion
surely it's not a good idea for a judge to state that insulate Britain 'inspire him'?

to be fair he did still fine them but surely comments like this are not suitable (and could be seen to be encouraging said idiots)?

Maybe the fine should come with a victim's surcharge for each and every person they delayed that day?
£50 x 1000, 10,000, 50,000 should put them off a little more...and you have to stay superglued to your lawyer until it's paid.
I'm surprised no-one has attempted to superglue themselves to one of these protesters, to see how they like it.

As the OP says, the Judge has no business delving into Politics in Public.
It's not his job.
In my opinion, they should all have had jail sentences.
What he said was only 'political' if you define that term so widely as to be essentially meaningless. Agreeing with a defendant that humans are fIt's not his job.

king up the planet and that something needs to be done about it is about as 'political' as agreeing that the Earth is an oblate spheroid. Lots of people going out of their way to be outraged here - for all that the judge may have been inspired by what the defendants said in court he still made it clear that what they did was against the law.motco said:

I think it's usual practice for judges (magistrates) to summarise their judgement, and reasons for the sentence they give. That will take into account mitigating factors, raised during the trial.
As someone above has said: people seem to be scraping the barrel trying to be outraged here, aided by certain tabloid papers.
Judges are human - we all try to impress the judge if in court as we feel doing so will have us treated more leniently. Whether or not he said this, he was going to be 'impressed' by them and it affect his view of them.
If that also led to leniency with the punishment then hey, why be hypocritical about it? That is what we ALL try to achieve.

I have no problem with a person's right to demonstrate, however, that does not allow them to break other laws such as obstruction and they should be prosecuted for this.
Didn't someone once say something about there being a moral responsibility to break unjust laws?In a few decades, there's going to be general agreement those protestors were doing the right thing.

what actually prevents an inconvenienced driver from taking a civil action?
Interesting question, and one I've wondered about in the past whilst sat in a traffic jam caused by someone having a thankfully survivable, but stupid and avoidable accident. In the case of a protest group, you might struggle with who to go after. Is any one of the protestors directly responsible? If, on a 2-lane road, Dave glues himself to L1 and Bob glues himself to L2, which one of them held you up?
You'd presumably need to show a tangible loss as well, rather than "it was really annoying".

The problem I have with IB, XR et al is that they empower the "I don't like change and find it scary, so I'll pretend climate change is a myth perpetrated by whining hippies" crowd whilst alienating the normal people who agree something needs to be done, but are expecting their taxes and substantial energy bills to be funding the change. Lord knows we don't want normal people getting pissed off by proxy with any positive move.
Look at the suffragette movement: a lot of ordinary people were supportive of the idea of universal suffrage, but got pissed off with many of the actions of the suffragettes and certainly wouldn't have said they were doing the right thing.

He's trying to send a message that they aren't idiots. He's a bright bloke who's just spent a bit of time listening to them, so who's likely to have an informed view about them, him or you?https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-6108568...

It's amazing how people form this opinion or claim that judges aren't in touch with real life, ordinary people, etc. These guys spend all their time wading through other people's fNo change there.
ked up lives and mistakes. It's hard to imagine a group more in touch with reality. They're about as sharp and articulate a group as you could hope to meet too. A clue: if a judgement seems odd, it's because either you haven't understood it, or it has been grossly misdescribed in the junk newspaper you're reading and you've been actively misled.speedyguy said:

The district judge said that after listening to the statements made by the defendants/offenders, 'I intend to do what I can to reduce my own impact on the planet,'No change there.
A judge that actually listens to what those in the court says is an idiot?
Some posters are weird.

On another planet with their head up an ostriches ass ?
People have been banging on about climate impact for several years now, why do you think green taxes are hammering everything ? The latest wheeze being Red fuel duty removal, on top of carbon credit trading, recycling etc.
If the DJ doesn't even know what's going on in the world from their cosseted world are they even fit to be in position of DJ?
