Bought a car with rusty underside
Discussion
My friend bought a reasonably new Mazda suv type thing from a main dealer - not mentioning any names. This was around 6 months ago while the post covid car buying chaos was in full effect. He sent the car to his local mechanic today who he knows and trusts. The mechanic just called him to alert him to a very rusty underside. He said it is not dangerous but it needs attention. So I'm guessing there is no recourse with the supplying dealer but I thought I'd ask on here to see if that's true and if anyone has any advice
Thanks

Thanks

Looks like just bad surface rust to me, I'd say clean it up and give it a lick of paint.
It's quite common for subframes etc to look like that, but as long as it's not got to the point of affecting the strength of the components (which it sounds like the mechanic has confirmed isn't an issue), it's not overly worrying.

Looks about right. Mazda does have a 10 year corrosion guarantee but quite what that covers is anyone's guess
Edit - 12 year bodywork perforation guarantee. Looks honestly about what I'd expect. Your friend could have someone spend a few hours de-rusting the body shell and seal it up if you like. The suspension components will likely fail for other reasons before the rust gets too bad.

I'll have a punt and say that's 6-7 years old. Will be interesting to know the answer!

Mostly I think it is as expected for the age and mileage. However, it is slightly concerning that the worst areas are around the subframe mounting points to the monocoque. I would be thinking about having that treated and sealed.

Could you post a few more photos up so we can give a proper opinion.....
Looks like a 5 year old car that has not been looked after and never seen any ACF 50, Lanoguard, etc etc. But it looks structurlarly fine. Tell him to clean it up a bit, get some ACF 50 on it and it will be fine for many years.
Take a look under a 6 year old transit and it will look similar on the subframes etc.

Seriously OP that isn't yet structural but probably would benefit from from some rust retardant to keep it from becoming so. I used metalmorphosis on my 60 year landrover chassis and that turned all the corrosion black, then spray something over the top to protect the bare metal.
