New Licence number from dvla

First post, apologies if wrong thread. Happy for a mod to move.

Have been driving nearly 40 years, had to renew my licence ( under the 10 year rule) earlier this year, new licence has come through, driver number has changed, Just one of those things I remember but have always known my driver number , so spotted it as soon as licence arrived , also you can’t get my date of birth from the numbers as you could previously,

Has anyone come across this before?

The number once change unless your name changes. Also if you are female (assuming from Debbie in your username) there is a 5 added to the decade.

So the numbers for a female born 10th September 1989 would be.

859109

For a male with the same DOB it would be.

809109

My licence number changed as well when I changed my surname but only the last two letters before the issue number.

You should be able to work out what your number should be from the list below (other than the random numbers/letters at the end). Do digits 6-11 match with the DOB at point 3 on your card below your name?


Digit 1–5: The first five characters of the surname (extra 9’s added for names shorter than 5 letters)

Digit 6: The decade digit from the year of birth (e.g. for 1977 it would be 7)

Digit 7–8: The month of birth (+5 for the first character if female)

Digit 9–10: The day in the month of birth

Digit 11: The year digit from the year of birth (e.g. for 1977 it would be 7)

Digit 12–13: The first two initials of the first names, (9 if no middle name)

Digit 14: Arbitrary digit – often 9

Digit 15–16: Two computer digits

Yes. DVLA data entry error when photocard renewed. Corrected after complaint and birth certificate submitted.

Lets hope that there aren't more than 10 people with the similar enough names and birthdays...(Assuming digit 14 can be 0-9 and the last 2 are check digits)

Thanks for the explanation, I just tweaked it slightly from 1977 to 1978 as there are two identical markers there I know it makes sense if you read it once you've deciphered it!
