A question: If you need glasses for VDU work and/or reading, but have excellent vision at long distance, you have a dilemma - you can't wear your specs 'cos they're not suitable for distance, and without them, the speedo is blurred.
A valid excuse if caught a little over the limit or not? (I think I can guess the answer)
To pre-empt the suggestion of vari or bi-focals, that would require constant positioning of your head to see the speedo, taking your attention away from the road for an excessive length of time.

Repositioning of the eyes with bifocal/varifocal should not be necessary if they are correctly set. However another solution would be a half eye which is half a frame with just the reading in the bottom (like what judge/doctors wear).
I don't think I couldn't read the speedo would wash with the BiB.

If you can read a standard dimension car number plate unaided from 20.5 meters in good daylight, your eyesight meets the requirements of the RTA for driving.

You would not get any compassion for an excuse such as I did not have my reading glasses on.

My daily drive....a modern car - not a problem at all - large, clear speedo characters.

My occasional drive....an older car, speedo characters smaller - getting to be a bit of an issue on darker days.

Just tried a old-ish prescription vari-focals - they work fine.

Thanks for the replies.

BTW - the 'excuse' was not meant to be taken seriously
