Camera Question

Hello all few questions

1. What type of camera is this model etc?
2.Can it record your average speed type and be used to record current speed over a speed trap? I.e used if you was going over the limit at the exact spot say someone..was going 80 in a 70 past it

I always thought that they were specs average but look different got me a bit concerned now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those are NOT average speed cameras.

They will get you for passing it at an excessive speed. But unless I'm remembering incorrectly, I'm sure these flash when they go off, so you'd have known if it got you. Isn't pretty much most of the M6 between Manchester and Brum covered by these now?

That's HADECS, Not Specs.

They can do all manner of fancy things, but all their current implementations have stuck to the basic static camera setup - I.e. Drive past quickly to recieve car photography

78 is just within the tolerance of 10%+2 which most forces operate to. 79 would (may) have seen you ticketed.

Indicated speed or GPS speed?

Indicated so true speed was probably around 76-77 here's hoping they follow that guideline

you'll be fine... 78 indicated is probably no more than 74-75 actual speed.

This approach appears to be somewhat of a myth now unfortunately. I was caught doing 80mph on the A64 in April (70mph limit). The NIP came through and the speed was 80! I checked my car against GPS and it is bang on. Audi S5 for reference so presumably the same system used in all VAG cars.

I think at 80 your running the risk regardless of any 10 percent guidelines, I know my car Speedo is about 2mph over actual speed but some cars are more accurate and others also I'm guessing older tyres increase the discrepancy?

So I think at 78 on mine I should be ok but it's not guaranteed!

And much like a Gatso camera, the HADECS cam fixed to the side of the gantry in your picture will use radar and take two pictures (probably half a second apart) and will use the calibrated white lines in each lane to detect your speed and identify which lane is speeding. If you were driving through at 70mph and another vehicle blasted through in the lane next to you at 100mph but both passing the gantry at the same time, the pictures will show which lane the speeder was driving in.

Older tyres would have less than a 2% reduction in rolling circumference.

Varies from force to force, i know on the M5 around bristol they trigger at 78 if no lower limit set.


There was also a famous case on m5 were a Highways England error left them on 20mph for a long time after and incident was clear and motorway was free flowing, A&S police took pleasure in issuing alot of fines and when challenged in court they were upheld!!!!

Worth noting in the fuel protest avon and somerset also arrested many drivers for driving at less than 30mph, so as usual with them its whatever suits their current position and not what is safe and legal

Didn't see it flash but I wasn't focused on the camera so it's hard to say for sure

So famous, I'd never heard of it - despite working for them for almost 10 years...is there a news article you could link to, as I can't find anything?

Was this in a variable speed limit zone?

I don't think these are operational when the variable speed limit is not active but I could be wrong.

If they are active I have been very lucky after speeding through a couple of them a few months ago.

They also flash, I saw someone getting flashed on the M6 today.

EDIT: I am incorrect, they are active all the time.

I think you'll find they are active all the time. I've seen cars get flashed on plenty of occasions in my rear view mirror and on the other side of the road where there hasn't been an enforceable speed limit shown above any lanes.

As for the grey box 'camera' units behind each lane's variable sign... they have always mystified me. I've gone through those at some speeds well north of 100mph before, probably caused by my own ignorance and overconfidence, but nothing has resulted. I've always wondered if they are just dummy units seeing as the white lines appear to be painted under almost every gantry now, whether or not there is a side-mounted speed camera or the mysterious grey boxes.

Can anybody provide any info?

Grey cameras don't do anything any more.

As for the A14 it's worth doing some research because I read some where that there is a problem with re classifying the road from A14 to A14(M) so the cameras are not operating until this has been resolved.

It was SOUTHWEST I know other areas are run quite differently. There was alot of fuss made in 2019 when the enquiry review was published!

Was left on from 2.30pm till 7.30am and 439 drivers were flashed some lost theirs licences!

I'd say those cameras are set a LOT lower than 78 around the western side of the M25
