Not me... it's not me... but someone I know has just got a NIP in the post for 38mph in a 30mph limit. It's a first offence... is it definitely speed awareness course offer still... or is there a chance of points and a fine? I'm assuming the former but thought I'd check.

I got a speed awareness for 34 in a 30. I fear 38 is too high. Your friend is going down.

ETA: See below. I know nothing. hehe

anyone else notice how disproportionally less you can speed in the higher bands?

in a 30 zone, you get a summons for doing 50, which is 66% over the speed limit.

yet on a motorway, you get a summons for doing 96, which is only 37% over the speed limit, and obviously, motorways are far, far safer per passenger mile travelled than urban roads. if you had the same leeway of 66%, then you wouldnt get a summons until 117mph, which, lets be honest, most modern cars can do perfectly safely...

I have just completed a speed course and at the minute you can do this via zoom online at home or wherever , it took 3 hours with around 10 others . Far easier than completing in a classroom i did a few year ago .

What really annoys me about that, was that I got caught by a camera doing 34mph in a 30 zone, which is fast enough to get three points and a fine, but not fast enough to attend a speed awareness course instead!

Do what? The minimum you will get caught at is 35 and you will be offered a course or FP dependant on wether you have done a course in the previous 3 years.
If you have any documentary of the unicorn of speeding conviction of less than 35mph PH would like to see it as no one has ever been able to provide such.

Depends how you phrase it. It's 26mph more vs 20mph more, so you get more leeway in an absolute sense.

Would you trust many of our drivers doing 117mph, though? Not sure I trust some of them doing 70...

Except the risk of death and serious injury is double that of UK motorways.

I know someone who 'merely' received 3 points after being caught by a police officer with a speed gun doing 68 in a 30.

The cop pulled him over at the time.

I know this is true because I witnessed it.

What were they actually done for, though? It sounds to me it was more ‘driving without due care’, because the speed could not be quantified by a suitable device.

He received a sp30.

There were extenuating circumstances. The section of road was straight for about a mile and lined exclusively, either side by garden centres.

The chap was pulled at about 7:30pm on a sunny Sunday summer evening. All of the garden centres were closed at that time.

The cop pulled him over into the car park of the garden centre where he'd been stationed with his radar gun and the driver immediately admitted he'd been a fool and apologised.

The discussion soon turned to the driver's car and by the end of the chat and to the driver's great surprise, the policeman told him he'd just give him a sp30, then sent him on his way.

Blimey, the summons level for 20mph looks a little disproportionate.
I can easily imagine straying up to 35mph on a well sighted straight surburban road, and not notice that some namby pamby council has turned the whole town into a 20mph zone.
Straight to a summons!

It happens - Aug 2021, West Mercia region, I got done by a camera doing 34 in a 30, no points and no recent attendance on a speed awareness course - was not offered one and when I enquired it was because I had not been exceeding the limit by enough, if I had been caught at 35 I would have been offered the course, I had no choice but to take the points and pay the fine

Why would I take the points and a fine if I could have attended a Speed Awareness Course online at a cost less than the fine?
