I was on a 30 mph stretch of road that ahead changed to a 50mph limit. About 20 yards from the 50 sign a marked police car was in a little side road. I had 35 mph on the GPS.

So yes, I sweated for 14 days but nothing yet now on day 16.

However, office know all reckons marked cars rarely carry laser guns and if they did, the copper has to get out and use a tripod or two hands on the gun while standing and pointing it directly at the front or rear of car. That the officer cannot take a reading from the seat of the car (using hand held laser guns) and particularly not when parked at a right angle to traffic.

Is that true?

Not true. They absolutely can do ot from sat in the drivers seat at a right angle to the road.

No need for the tripod and two hands on the gun.

if they had a speed gun pointed at you you would see it

But look at it this way. Your speedo probably read nearer 40 and you were going 17% over the speed limit in a built up area. Do you think that is ok?

If they were side on to you then the speed they measure would be significantly lower than the speed you were doing, if they are at a complete right angle they would read the speed of traffic at more or less 0 no matter how fast it is going.

It was careless of me, yes. I am often tailgated at this part of the road but was not that day so even less reason to speed up early.

Quite, plus I see no mention of this being a built up area…

It was 20 yards from a 50 sign. I doubt it was outside a school, with children playing in the street.

This is from over 10 years ago, so I'm sure by now more police cars have radar built in. Not seeing the officer with a radar gun or tripod is'nt a guarantee that you didn't get tagged.
Just saying.

Outside of airports and Westminster tube station, I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a copper that wasn't pointing a speed gun.

Yes. Depending on the road, traffic, hazards and conditions.

Look at it this way, do you actually believe that speed limits in this country are always appropriate for the roads they apply to?

I was there, well I saw someone drive past a police car a couple of weeks ago, so it was probably the same incident.
The area was so built up, there was several houses, a school less than a mile away, it was closed being the evening and a weekend, but they might have been doing a parents evening, it was nearly end of term and anyway I think I saw a kitten.
Absolute animal driving like that.
I am sure if my wife had been with me at the time rather than on the other end of a hands free phone conversation I'm sure she would have tutted about it. I was too busy trying to beat my hyper miling personal best and scrolling through queen's greatest hits on my built-in touch screen, but I wasn't breaking any laws.

It doesn't really matter what you think or believe is appropriate.

Of course it does, everyone is entitled to an opinion about whether they think or believe the speed limit is appropriate at any given place.
Whether they then comply with the existing speed limit is a completely different thing.

Again, thanks all for the responses.

Just to add:

The road is a long A road which passes through a few villages and small towns where you have the 30 mph. Once clear of the villages, particularly at the end of the road/last village I was on. you have 1-2 miles or so of typical country road before needing to stop for a roundabout - two lane traffic with just hedges and fields either side. So no pedestrians, built up area or or anything but clear road. And this starts well before the 50 mph sign.

There can be little argument in my view that my speed was of no danger to anyone but yes, it was over the posted limit and so I was at risk of being fined.

As has been said, we all have differing views and although I'd like to think any copper clocking me at 35mph just yards from the 50 sign, also would think 'no danger, not someone we need to target' sure, as we all know, not every police officer or driver agrees.

No danger to anyone? What if the police officers helmet had blown off they jumped out to get it and accidentally left the hand brake off and ran themselves over. Because you were speeding you had already gone past so didn't see it, didn't stop and help so entirely your fault and you should be ashamed of yourself.
