‘Tinted’ number plates - why?

At the risk of sounding like a real Victor Meldrew I’m seeing an awful lot of these tinted number plates, some to the point of being barely readable.
Why on Earth do people do it? They look tacky (arguably as bad as those 4D plates) and are clearly going to get you a tug from Plod at some point.
There’s a family down my street who probably have a place in the council thread for their other efforts, but deserve a special mention for their Tesla, RR and 120d all having plates that are so tinted they’re almost impossible to read (bonus points for the RR having ‘BO55 xxx’ on it…!)
Is this just the latest ‘thing’?

Because they have "murdered out" everything else or if it is matte then usually to make looks smooth.
Generally I see things (and for those with them please take this in the right way) red flags for bellend driving. Including this, 4d plates, dodgy looking tinting and a few other factors.

They just make the car look dirty and uncared for in my eyes, like they removed the protective film on new plates but all the road dust has stuck to it. They do seem to be a reliable indicator of the type of person who is the driver though, so they serve some purpose.

The cameras can easily whack the contrast up post-photo and the digits become clear, hasn't been a problem for a while now. 
On a similar theme, why is it that every chav car owner changes the rear number plate bulbs to ones that are brighter than the surface of the sun? What's that all about then? And yes, usually coupled with a tinted or heavily embossed number plate. It looks utterly utterly w

This one always makes me chuckle - there’s a Fabia a few streets away with exactly this combo. k and the owners always drive like bell-ends.It has a ‘chameleon tint’ windscreen too, which also looks terrible.

But they enjoy modding their cars, as do the majority of P/H'ers I'm sure.

The way they mod their cars might not be to everybody's taste.
But they enjoy modding their cars, as do the majority of P/H'ers I'm sure.

There is taste and being safe and legal.The way they mod their cars might not be to everybody's taste.

I have no issue with mods as long as they remain within the constraints of therefore being "safe". For me these tinted plates can be sooo heavily tinted to be unreadable.... Car involved in an incident, numberplate pretty unreadable.
The windscreen crew deserve the same dressing down.
