Bit of an interesting one.

Wife picks up some false nails in a well known high street chemist, asks my daughter to hold them whilst she answers her phone and gets payment card out. Daughter pops the item on the counter- sale is refused as my daughter has placed the item on the counter.

The nails contain a glue and are a restricted sale item the assistant explains. Wife explains the item is for her- sale still refused and wife leave shop embarassed.

Wife tells me- I return to the shop with her, sale refused to me. Manager is requested- confirms no sale to us or any ‘known associates’ of us. We thanked them for their time and left embarassed. We were polite at all times.

We are forty plus yr old professionals and find this situation ridiculous.

Any thoughts appreciated?

Move on. Surely you’ve got more important things in your life - and unless a very small town, other places to buy. It’s annoying - it’s not life changing.

Glue will be a think 25 item (basically if you look under 25 you’ll be ID to make sure you are over 18(?) maybe 16 for glue).

Shop assistant is doing their job to make sure they don’t get fined along with the store.

Manager is supporting the staff member with their decision.

Get house valued, practice sad face and contact the Daily Mail or just buy from another branch.

Ridiculous that you ‘as 40+ year olds professionals’ are so easily embarrassed?

Pretty standard these days isn’t it. If you’re buying booze in a group and someone can’t produce id they’ll refuse the whole group.

It’s safer for retailers to do this than run the risk of falling foul of licensing rules.

OP, its idiots being idiots. My son aged about 8-9 got out of the car at Sainsburys to be with his Dad while I was filling up. He touched my hand as I held the fuel "gun" trying to help. Fuel cut off instantly with a tannoy about under 16's not being allowed to fuel vehicles.

Ignore, move one and leave them to it.

You went back to the shop to see what would happen?

I suppose at least they were consistent.

I must be getting old, but do you really have time to waste on this nonsense?

Go elsewhere/another branch where you're not known & buy your daughters's wife's falsies.

Life really is too short.

AIUI, the law on glue is that glues with solvents in cannot be sold to under 18s, or to anyone if there's reason to believe it's on behalf of an under 18 for the purpose of intoxication.

So, the retailer has implicitly accused the Op's wife of being a bad parent and his daughter of being a glue sniffer.

Unless it's not about the glue and more about the questionable nature of false fingernails if you're not Tommy Iommi.

It's not the situation that's ridiculous, it's your reaction to it that is.

I that were me, I'd kick up a fuss and make it as big as possible..twitter, local rag, head office and so on.

Then once it was all sorted I'd go back in and buy the nails.

THEN I'd open the fking glue and let my daughter have a lovely long sniff!

That'll fking teach them!

It's all a bit pathetic, yes, but your easiest way around it is probably to go to another branch or see if you can order them online instead.

You never get anywhere trying to reason your point with nonsense like this. Common sense didn't get them into this position, and it's not going to get them out of it.

I find it hard to fathom why this event appears to have consumed your life for the day, including a personal trip to the store and then a post on the Internet.
