On a road near me, someone (I'm guessing a disgruntled local resident) has taken it upon themselves to reduce the speed limit from 40 to 20.

They've achieved this using cans of white spray paint followed by black, to erase the 4 and change it to a 2. I haven't got a picture unfortunately but it's very obviously "handwritten". All the signs on this particular 1/2 mile run appear to have been changed.

There are 3 speed cameras on that stretch of road, that a few people have started slowing down to 20 to pass.

I'm assuming this can't have been done by the council or anyone "official", as I would imagine that a sign modified like this has no legal standing as it doesn't comply with the font/size/reflectivity requirements in the legislation. Am I right?

Report here:

https://www.fixmystreet.com/

It will go to the local highways people quickly and they will get it sorted. I’d imagine that will be a quick to fix.

Change it to a 50? That would certainly annoy whoever did it...

That is true and very tempting, although it'd be encouraging other driver's to go over the limit and incur the wrath of the speed cameras.

Funny, I noticed the other day same has happened to number of repeater 40 limit signs on a road near me.

Said road also has 3 speed cameras on it, but no where near the 'amended' signs.

But the 'amended' signs cover the stretch of road past a school.

Wasn't aware of the fixmystreet page, will report on that.

Drove through Bournemouth a couple of months ago and there were dozens and dozens of speed limit signs untidily spray painted over in grey.
Shabby chic ?

Just add Ainsley Harriett pictures to them to complete the effect.
