What do safety camera vans identify besides speeding?

Do camera vans capture other things besides excess speed?

Do the operators look through their devices for people on the phone, no seatbelts etc

Got to thinking about it tonight as i passed a camera van on the road tonight just after i had been surprised at the number of people I saw with just one headlight & I wondered if they’d get a notice through the post?

South Gloucester post every now and again that they use a van on the A417 to identify drivers using their phone.

I recall they also have identified tailgating, though bot sure if successfully prosecuted (or even fined) for driving without due care.

Can they identify mis-spaced / misrepresented number plates?

They can use it for phone use. My mate got caught for it a few years back from a camera van (when it was 3pts so a while ago). He was speeding as well...
That was holding it to his ear though, I doubt it would catch the phone-in-lap texters!

The ones in Wales also claim to enforce seatbelts, but I very much doubt it as as they would make an absolute fortune here if they did! Perhaps it's only when they get them for speeding and then look at the pictures or something.

Toehill, of Cupar, said afterwards: "I think it's incredibly harsh. Just because I'm a young guy, they want to make an example of me.

My workmate got a fine for wearing his seatbelt under his armpit from a van in Bristol. In a worksvan with a black bulkhead and wearing a black polo shirt so the operator was quite eagle eyed. Also send out fines for number plates that appear too small on bike nights aswell.

Speeding, mobile phones, no seat belt, illegal number plates, double white overtakes.. Basically anything you can enforce by video. Ours in Hampshire also have ANPR fitted to feed back into the office too.

I would like them to fine MLM’s on motorways and dual carriageways: these people cause hours of delays and are a significant danger on the motorway.

Approached a "safety van" near Rawtenstall tonight on the local bypass, fair play, it had flashing coloured lights on the roof that you could spot a mile away.

Anyone would deserve to get done as they would have to be blind not to notice it.

No idea but (despite what court found) it isn't necessarily in the legal sense dangerous driving imo (careless absolutely). But whatever, can't say I'm massively sympathetic or going to campaign for his innocance or anything. Play stupid games get stupid prizes.
