Penalty for no front plate (again - sorry)

Forgive me, I know this has been discussed at length, and I've tried searching the Highway Code without success.

Is the penalty for not having a plate a fixed penalty of something like £50-100? Or did the proposed bill that has heftier fines and points go through and become law?

Usually dealt with by £100 non-endorsable fixed penalty. If it goes to court could be a fine of up £1000.

Unless it’s something exotic, it should be 6 points.
9 or more if it’s a scratty Fiesta ST with it wedged down the windscreen

All the local yobs seem to have picked up this ‘trend’ - no idea why, it just looks st.

I took it as sarcasm, but they really do walk among us judging by how many people do it around here.

My favourite are the ones without the screw holes even filled in
At least it’s a great way to identify throbbers, along with pop and bang remaps and ‘deadly’ stickers

If you're able to, look carefully at the drivers of these cars, most look unwashed for a month or two. The pops , burps, bangs plus missing number plates seem to attract those allergic to soap and water..

I got fined for no front plate, but the annoying thing is mine had genuinely fallen off on the first drive after having the front bumper resprayed. I had only managed about 10 miles between leaving home and an oncoming policeman doing the worlds quickest U turn. Turns out double sided tape doesn’t rate freshly polished bumpers.

It was the fact that there were no screw holes which went against me as I’m OCD. I got the “that old chestnut” from the policeman because there was no evidence on one ever being fitted in his opinion, and tbh standing there looking at the car I couldn’t really disagree !

That was £100 penalty and no points.

Where my friend works, the traders (oil and gas) have just been relocated from central London to the surrey office, bringing with them a lot of expensive metal to the car park - lots of M and AMG badges, and one Ferrari and one Lambo. Neither of which have front plates. In both cases, the traders that own(?) them just shrug and say "ill just chuck the £100 at the copper and he can pick it up".

The security guards tried to stop them entering the site as the rules are that all vehicles must be fully roadworthy. They threatened to have them sacked.

During Motorway Cops: Catching Britain's Speeders on Channel 5 this evening a guy in a Lamborghini Huracán Performante got pulled for no front plate. £100 fine. I did wonder where, exactly, you're supposed to put a front plate on one of these cars. Unless you use a stick-on one on the front boot lid you're going to interfere with the aerodynamics and/or disrupt the flow of air into the cooling systems. Whatever you do it'll ruin the appearance of the front of the car. Perhaps it's time that the authority which grants permission to a manufacturer to sell a car in the UK also mandates the design of a car to accommodate the legally required identifying mark so it it's accommodated properly and, as a result, doesn't look stupid while interfering with aerodynamics and/or cooling.

Hooning chum of mine has the front numberplate of his Performante attached to the passenger sun visor which obviously automatically drops down when parked up or should plod appear from nowhere. Seems to work too he's never had a ticket so obviously the inherent design flaw of the front of the car being unable to accommodate a proper front plate holds water. :

Same story with the new Emira btw may have to consider that on delivery lol.

You can thank the aforementioned idiots for the lack of tolerance police have - like when I’d accidentally turned my front fog lights on in clear weather (new to me car, and telltale light broken!)

Luckily I was just ‘educated’ - but still annoying.
I think those driving with front fogs on in clear weather are in the same category as those with a purposely missing front plate.

Everyone disagrees; there can’t be anyone with a semi-reasonable IQ who thinks a run-of-the-mill car looks better with a gawping hole where the plate was.

I thought it was already part of the type approval process.

How are front fog lights any worse than DRLs? They're usually low, and while they might be bright but they are designed to scatter light downwards towards to road surface close to the vehicle in such a way that they don't blind oncoming drivers. If they could blind oncoming drivers, they would reflect off the water droplets in fog and blind the driver of the car the lights were mounted on, so they wouldn't work very well as fog lights.

Rear fog lights can be very blinding, because not only are they bright but they shine directly towards drivers following behind.

Chap on the Police think on C5 tonight got £100 fine but he could be stopped unlimited times.


14k cars had illegal plates or no plates in 2020 on the roads apparently
