I am currently trying to insure an additional car (boring MPV nothing fancy), I had a good quote via one of the comparison websites which I went ahead with. However the insurer contacted me saying that the information I provided them and the insurance CUE database was different and therefore they could no longer cover me. Early this year (February) after many years of never claiming I had two non fault claims on my insurance. After speaking to my current insurer I was told that even though between me and them they had closed both claims in my favour, as they are still trying to recover the claims from both the third parties they will remain on the CUE database as being fault claims. I then asked them for a quote since they knew I wasn't at fault, however even they couldn't cover me(!). I was advised to wait another month before contacting the claims department to ask them to hurry things up.

Then over the weekend I got an email from my insurer saying they had made full recovery of their costs on the second claim and were closing the file. Using this information I tried again to get a quote via the comparison websites with me marking the first claim as being my fault, with this new information I got quotes £100+ more than my original quotes and with excesses now £750+ rather than £250 before.

I'm assuming there is nothing I can do but suck up the extra money and I hope I never have to make a fault claim on the new policy as it's going to cost me £750+?

Have you also now technically had a policy cancelled?

Yes which I'm sure will be great when I next try and get insurance and it asks me if I've ever had insurance refused or cancelled. What's annoying about this is I put the claims down as me not being at fault as at the time having received two separate letters from my insurer saying they had found in my favour I believed this to be the case. I only found out about the CUE system and my claims status on it after the new insurer contacted me saying they were cancelling my policy.

Having a claim and being 'at fault' is two separate things. These questions are usually clear on the forms.

The form was very clear and said tell us about any claims you have had in the last five years, I truthfully at the time filled out both claims, for each one it asks who was at fault and if your no claims was affected. At the time I said I was not at fault and my no claims was not affected. I paid for my policy then the insurer contacted me saying the CUE database said I was at fault for both of these and therefore they cancelled my policy.

I would send copies of the letters you received from the insurers saying not at fault to the insurer and ask them to get the database updated

This is where the problem lies, my insurance company wrote to me saying as far as they were concerned between me as a customer and them, the claims were both closed in my favour. However as I found out after speaking to them, the claims sit on the CUE database as my fault until they have recovered the money paid to me from the third party. So far one has now been closed but the other one is still open.

This is what I got from them today:

We write with reference to the above incident and our recent telephone conversation.
We write to confirm that this has been logged as a Non-Fault claim against your policy.
We understand from the other party's insurer that their client has not notified them of this incident,
so they are currently making enquiries regarding liability.
We have sent the other insurers a copy of the dashcam footage, as evidence to prove their client was
at fault for this incident, and currently await their response.
Unfortunately, as liability has not been established yet, this is still showing as a claim against your policy.
We will keep you updated with any developments.

OP, you are probably already aware that having an insurance company cancel an insurance policy will lead you into a world of pain and expense.

Your existing company are aware of how they have misled you and therefore need to sort it with the company who cancelled your policies. In order to ensure that all records are such that you do not have to declare these policy cancellations in future.

One to refer to our Mr (Wonder) Twig?!

Will the cancellation be recorded on the CUE database as well?

This ^^

Morally, I would have hoped that the insurer who cancelled would either not put it on CUE, or remove it if they have, once they'd seen the letters from your original insurer confirming no fault, showing that you weren't fraudulent in your application.

Best of luck to you OP

From when? Didn't they give a time as to when their cover would cease?

I can’t stress enough how much you need to avoid the answer to the ‘insurance cancelled’ question being a yes!

Speak to the insurer as advised above and make sure they sort it.

Quote was supposed to start just after October. I got an email on Friday saying the CUE database didn’t match what I told them. After speaking with my own insurer about the claims I then told my new insurer why I gave my answers. they then cancelled the policy.

Surely if the policy wasn't meant to start until October, they haven't canceled the policy because there wasn't a valid policy in place, they just didn't activate their quote.

I’m not sure how it works, I paid the first payment and was set to pay the rest monthly. I was given a policy number. The person I spoke to at the insurance company told me it was cancelled after I told them what my current insurer told me regarding my claims.

Correct. You haven't had a policy cancelled. You've had an insurer refuse to go ahead with a policy that hadn't started yet. No insurer ever asks about that. You've been dumped by your fiancée a week before your wedding and you're going to be asked if you've ever been divorced. The answer is no. So you're in the clear on that front.

This is the email they sent me after the phone call, I’m still confused if I actually had a policy cancelled or not. Their email seems to suggest I have, although it says ‘your cancellation request’ which makes it sound like I wanted to cancel it.

Hi Mr Lenovo
Your Car Insurance cancellation request
Your vehicle: Xxxxxxx
Policy number: xxxxxxx
Your policy which was due to start on X October 2022 has been cancelled. As the policy has been cancelled before the policy start date, you have had no cover under this policy.
In addition to the policy, any cover extras you had included will also be cancelled at the same time.
For your own protection, we would like to remind you that it is an offence to keep a vehicle without insurance unless you have notified the DVLA that your vehicle is being kept off the road and you have a valid Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). Please make sure you arrange alternative insurance for your vehicle should you need it, so you stay protected.
Thank you for insuring your car with X. If you would like another quote from us, or if you have any queries, please contact us on 034xxxxx

You have not had a policy cancelled. You cannot cancel a policy that hasn't started. You can just not proceed with it. Forget it, move on, and any questions about having a policy cancelled, answer truthfully NO.
