Near me, they have replaced 4 fixed speed cameras with average speed cameras over approx 5-6 miles. As it’s on an A-road however, there are dozens of turnings for minor roads, houses, pubs, shops etc in between each set of cameras.

I’m struggling to understand how an average camera works when you have traffic that isn’t necessarily going through both cameras.

Assuming the original fixed cameras were placed in locations where speeding was common, it is now possible to drive through these sites at whatever speed you like as long as you turn off before the next camera.

Am I missing something obvious here?

No, you have to pass a 2nd camera to be "caught", so you could smash up the road between turn-offs at whatever speed you like.

Probably but there’s lots of local traffic too. I counted nearly 50 turnings of various types between two sets of cameras.

So if a lot of the traffic is adhering to the limit due to the average cameras then the local traffic is unlikely at most times of the day to be able to do whatever speed they like.
Plus this means for most users a 5-6 mile stretch is enforced not 5-500 yards at best.

That makes sense. Most people I know who have been caught by the old traps did so later at night when they weren’t in a slow moving convoy of commuters.

It will only catch cars that pass 2 camera's and above the average speed between both. I assume on one 60 limit road as if the limit changes then no idea how they work out the average speed for a conviction.

Sounds like the ridiculous 50 limit on the a38 liskeard to bodmin, used to be a fun road, now ruined. Dread to think of the no of speed camaras on the carland cross improvements.

Not so much fun when it was closed because some 'tard 'having fun' had crashed.

Were there some 'fatals' on that stretch?

Always some 'tard' on every road, everywhere, especially in tourist season, doesnt mean a blanket 50 avg check is necessary, otherwise the country would be a sea of them.

Yep. There always is on the a30 too, so far no avg SC however.

Most issues are caused by those going to slow down here, which is not policed. i suppose the 50 on the a38 saves actual proper policing, by making everyone go slow. Yet you still get 35-40'ers for the whole stretch.

It is happening everywhere these days sadly. frown

The A24 between Leatherhead and Box Hill has 50mph average cameras, the A31 from Farnham to Guildford has 60mph average cameras (but not the other way - yet) and the A217 between the M25 and Burgh Heath has 40mph cameras.

They all have junctions and the A217 has roundabouts and traffic lights as well, so if you slow down or stop at any of those (as you'll doubtlessly have to) there is some leeway. And the Mad Mile still has a 60 limit - for now anyway!

There’s an average speed camera zone near my house on the A588 where you would have to be trying to average more than 60.

Suspect it’s aimed at bikes.

Not too sure what you really mean by 'a fun road' - I guess this is one where you could drive fast, twisty (?), few junctions (?)

Isn't the idea to reduce the number of accidents and thus the number of traffic delays that impact everyone else on the road at the time?

That sort of comon sense went out the door years ago, sadly, and has no sign of returning.

Now its 'one size fits all based on the lowest common denominator'.
It infects my game lorry driving and is endlessly frustrating, they dumbed the skill requirements to drive vehicles down and can't work out why there's a lack of skill, so they fit more and more electronic guff supposed to prevent the deskilled doing their worst, which in turn attracts people with even less aptitude, and the cycle continues.

That’s too hard for them.

Wonder what will be next?
Man gets drunk in pub, causes fight, people get hurt/killed. Therefore the answer must be everyone should be limited to 2 pints by law. That’ll sort it out, won’t need any police around at weekends either.

Average speed cameras have gone up on the A3 between Burpham and Painshill, closer to Painshill than Burpham, I'm wondering it's due to the widening works that will be going on soon, however I don't think they are on yet as there is no signage.

I often thought this but then noticed on my busy A road there are tiny cameras set up on the exit roads, too. (Well on my exit they are)

I presume these are average speed cameras?

Arguably they've already punished themselves?
