Is this tyre a MOT fail?

Shouldn't the tread be visible for a pass?
It only has to have the minimum tread across the central 3/4 of the tyre. When they are that worn on the edge though, close inspection may show cords showing through, which is a fail.https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-...

I had my mot yesterday at a local tyre specialist who do odds and sods on motor maintenance.
They bring it round "you need new tyres and pads"....I walk in and it's got PASS on the cert ffs.
Anyway I've checked and yes, insides on rear slightly worn but not down to threads (front did a few months back) oh and no pad light has come on miraculously since having the MOT and even before.
I have read other posts here that say its a matter of opinion on advisories like this?

Need to check it all around, if it's that close in one place, it could be under at another point.
TBH, it doesn't matter, it needs replacing.
Agreed going into the winter months that looks past its best, in germany we would not be having this discussion, why we will never have autobahns as brits average attitude is they don't care what condition/tread level is on their tyres.TBH, it doesn't matter, it needs replacing.
No one can mot a tyre from that imagine, its ropey and has heavy shoulder wear, its appears to be just above wear bars so it may well have more than 1.65mm but less then 2mm is risky in my opinion.
To be honest if you presented that to me I would not want to sign it off for 12 months future use what is what 9/10 drivers treat an MOT as the only time they consider checking tyres or brakes
As a so called petrolhead I would be embarrassed to admit I took a car for MOT with tyres in that condition and clearly the tracking is a major issue,

I can understand someone presenting a car for MOT with a near-knackered tyre. You don't want to buy new tyres for a car that might have terminal 'moth' or incurable emissions. No one can mot a tyre from that imagine, its ropey and has heavy shoulder wear, its appears to be just above wear bars so it may well have more than 1.65mm but less then 2mm is risky in my opinion.

It's harder to understand quibbling about being told to change it. It's got 1000 miles left in, at best. If that's all you need to get an MOT, pay up and be thankful.
But, I prefer to get my tyres done by a local bloke I trust. Having had tyres changed by a general garage, they fitted not quite what I wanted, didn't notice the rims needed a clean-up to make them seal, and got the pressure wrong....

Oh, ok so your safety and that of your loved ones is not worth 4 tyres so around 200-400 encase your car fails on something terminal. It's harder to understand quibbling about being told to change it. It's got 1000 miles left in, at best. If that's all you need to get an MOT, pay up and be thankful.

I don't work on that basis which is maybe why we have such a pants car culture in this country.
What did it fail on.
> exposed cords
> under 1.65mm across 3/4 of the tyre
> Tyre is showing signs of separation or bulging
Interestingly you can't fail on perished tyres for a passenger car but for commercial there are some limits of age etc like 6 or 8 years I believe.
They could dryer that an Egyptian mummy but for a standard car MOT it's just an advisory!

So you'd be happy to spend £200-£400 on a car that has legal tyres and could be scrap tomorrow?I don't work on that basis which is maybe why we have such a pants car culture in this country.
Very honourable but I don't think you'll be selling the idea to many people.

Would this tyre be a fail at MOT due to outer edge wear? Is 295 width, my fault for having under inflated the front left which continually goes down on pressures and settles at 34 whereas ideal is 38psi.
You wouldn't happen to have a Cayenne would you? I had the same sort of wear from correctly inflated tyres on the left side. It's also had a hunters alignment a few times in my ownership which hasn't shown anything out.virdeeb said:

And yes absolutely it’s not going into winter without fresh boots on, I just needed to know whether I need to book tyres in for next week or not (mot 21st oct).
