Not really sure what to say about this other than thank God the taxi driver was ok and had no rear passengers and I hope the full weight of the law falls on the two idiots driving the Polo and Corsa, this could have been so much worse!

I don't know the road or speed limits etc but could the slower car have just turned out in front of them?

And why were people standing on the central reservation filming? They were expecting something exciting, but what?

Polo held up well considering the smash.

A race, clearly.

Yes, it does sound that way. There is a clue in the article as well- the filmer is described not as a passer by but as a 'spectator' but it is otherwise coy about what was happening.

The road is a 50mph stretch of dual carriageway between Newport and Magor in S Wales, regularly used by boy racers at night. It's a straight as a dye for hundreds of metres, the taxi was just making his way home

Doesn't look like the taxi was doing anywhere near 50mph to be fair. Not excusing the actions of the two racing but if he was doing 20mph or so he should take some of the responsiblity.

Firstly, no, he shouldn't.
Secondly, perhaps the taxi driver had decided to drive at speed below the limit owing to the fact that it was dark, the road appears to be wet and there are likely to have been a lot of 'spectators' on the side of the road that gave him cause for concern.

So, naturally, he drove 30 under the speed limit, didn't ask anyone what the fk was happening, and plodded along the road?

Anyway, chap in the Polo is a fking idiot, so's the Corsa driver, same with the "spectators".

Perhaps an unusual taxi driver driving so slowly, and perhaps a fail in defensive driving, but in no way does that make him to blame. If the idiots hadn't hit him, they would quite likely have hit something else, if not that day, next week.

Wouldn't asking somebody what was going on have required him to all but stop, so he'd be going 50 below the limit resulting in an even bigger speed differential, and you'd have a go at him for that too?

It's almost as if the war on race tracks/drag strips from NIMBYs and eco mentalist has a knock on effect.

Granted when I was 19 I did this on empty industrial estates on a Sunday night not a bypass.
