A friend received a dread brown envelope in the post.

Turns out she hadn't taxed her car since April and was busted. In mitigation she usually pays by DD and didn't notice it had stopped coming out of her account, she also has a demanding job that involves plenty of travel, so doesn't see the post every day.

In the letter there wasn't any mention of a late licence penalty or out of court settlement, this was all about court action, asking if she would plead guilty or not guilty, and contained a form for her to complete detailing income - presumably for calculation of a fine. It doesn't' suggest she was caught by cameras either.

As far as I know, this was the only letter she's been sent.

The dates the letter referenced were from April to June when a vehicle was used without current tax. Its now November, why the delay?

A conviction isn't going to go down well, she has the sort of job that involves frequent checks on her criminal record.

Is she stuffed?

Any comment welcome.

Start communication and let them know what is going on. They should be happy to pay fine and keep its cheep and simple for both sides, but for this outcome she needs to start talking and be lucky.

I would think as far as having a conversation goes, that ship sailed a while ago. I would suggest the OP’s friend has received a SJPN because they have ignored an earlier FP notice offering an out of court settlement

OP this a non recordable offence, no different to a minor speeding ticket. Will have no bearing on even an enhanced CRB

Your 'friend' should be having a word with their bank as i don't think direct debits just stop on their own.

I was also wondering why the debit had stopped.

My Tax DD stopped earlier this month because I was working away when the MOT expired.

I received a letter before it expired warning me it was nearing, another when it did expire along with an accompying email.

Short of someone knocking on the door they couldn't have been clearer in their notifications.

Of course, I hadn't thought of that (re my post above).

I guess OP friend was probably without MOT too then?

Happened to my neighbour's wife. Paid for VED by d/d but MoT ran out and the payment wasn't taken. A check for MoT validity is made.

I always buy my VED in full, for no other reason that I don't want to pay DVLA 5% extra for the privilege of reducing their admin. rolleyes If your MoT runs out, the VED remains valid until it expires.

With inflation running at 10% plus, surely the smart thing to do as a powerfully built director is to pay monthly and invest the surplus in frozen sausages and red bull
